Udupi: MAHE's women's cricket tournament inauguration honours star players

Udupi, Feb 26: In a splendid display of sportsmanship and talent, the Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE), in collaboration with the Association of Indian Universities, successfully hosted the All India Inter Zone Inter University Cricket Tournament for Women for the year 2023-24.

The much-anticipated event took place at the iconic Endpoint Ground on February 26, at 5 PM, marking a significant milestone in the advancement of women's cricket in India.
 
The tournament was graced by the presence of notable dignitaries, including chief guest Lt. Gen. (Dr.) M D Venkatesh, vice-chancellor of MAHE, who lauded the participants for their exceptional display of cricket. "This tournament stands as a testament to our commitment towards fostering a culture of inclusivity and excellence in sports. Witnessing such talented sportswomen on the field today reinforces our belief in the boundless potential of our youth," he said.

Dr Sharath Rao, pro vice-chancellor (health sciences) at MAHE and the event's guest of honour, emphasised the importance of sports in holistic development.

"Sports like cricket not only challenge the physical capabilities of our students but also instil in them the virtues of teamwork, leadership, and resilience. Today, we celebrate not just the victories, but the spirit of perseverance and camaraderie displayed by all teams," he said.
 
Presiding over the event, Dr H S Ballal, pro chancellor of MAHE, expressed his gratitude towards the All the participants, supporters for making the tournament a resounding success. "It is heartening to see such enthusiastic participation in women's cricket, which is crucial for the empowerment and recognition of women in sports. Events like these pave the way for a brighter, more inclusive future in sports academia," he said.
 
The All-India inter zone inter university cricket tournament for women 2023-24 not only showcased the sporting prowess of young women from universities across India but also highlighted the collaborative efforts of MAHE and the Association of Indian Universities in promoting gender equality and excellence in sports.
 
The event concluded with a grand awards ceremony, recognising the outstanding performances and sportsmanship exhibited throughout the tournament.

A special highlight of the ceremony was the felicitation of  Nishchith Pai from Udupi, who has represented India A in the BCCI Challengers Trophy 2023, and Thejaswini Uday Kumar, an opening batter and medium pacer who represented the Karnataka U19 women's cricket team under BCCI in 2023. Their presence added a significant layer of inspiration and aspiration for the participants, underlining the tangible prospects that cricket offers to dedicated athletes.

Dr Upendra Nayak, chief coordinator introduced the teams.

Dr Vinod C Nayak, secretary sports council MAHE welcomed the gathering. Dr Deepak Ram Bairy proposed the vote of thanks.
