Smith Relishing New Opening Role in T20s

London, Sep 25 (IANS/CMC): Cricketer Dwayne Smith says he relishes continuing at the top of the order, after opening for the first time in an international match in West Indies' 10-wicket loss to England.

Playing in the first Twenty20 International of the two-match series, the aggressive right-hander stroked a cameo 33 to help the visitors to 125 all out Friday.

"Opening the innings is a position where you have the most opportunity to get good scores for the team and set the tone for the innings," said Smith, who was recalled for this tour after 18 months out-of-favour.

"I have been doing it for Barbados in the Caribbean T20 and I have been enjoying the new role and responsibility, so I would like to be given the chance to continue at the top of the order for West Indies as well.

"I want to cement a spot in the team. I want to demonstrate that I am a versatile cricketer and I have the ability to make the adjustment as the situation arises."

Smith and fellow opener Johnson Charles, 36, handed the West Indies a vibrant start after they were sent in at the Oval, posting 51 from 30 balls.

However, the Windies innings plunged into turmoil after Smith played down the wrong line to one that turned slightly from left-arm spinner Samit Patel, and Charles fell to a catch in the deep.

Smith said despite the soft nature of his dismissal, he still had the confidence to continue in his new role.

"I felt pretty confident and upbeat when I was out there in the middle batting with Charles," said the 28-year-old.

"It was our first time batting together and I think we played pretty well together. It was my first time opening the batting in international cricket and I felt really good with the way I played.

"I thought I could have probably blocked out the one that got me out, as I was looking to build big score for the team. I was set and was quite disappointed that I fell at that stage."
