Business hours extended till 1 am to boost nightlife in Mangaluru, 10 other cities

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru

Mangaluru, Feb 17: The State government has announced a significant development for business establishments by extending operational hours for shops in Mangaluru and 10 other corporations. This move is expected to enhance the nightlife in the state.

The extended hours apply to municipal corporations, including Ballari, Belagavi, Davangere, Hubballi-Dharwad, Kalaburagi, Mangaluru, Mysuru, Shivamogga, Tumakuru, and Vijayapura, along with Bengaluru. The decision aims to stimulate economic activity and create more business opportunities within these metropolitan areas.

As a result of the new regulations, trading restrictions will be lifted until 1 am for bars, restaurants, pubs, and hotels, allowing businesses to operate into the night. While the government is yet to specify the types of shops and establishments covered under this extension, businesses have welcomed the move, anticipating increased trade and profits.

Hotel associations, recalling their request to the state government for round-the-clock operations, see this decision as a positive step.

Melwin, a hotelier in Mangaluru, expressed, “Extending business hours is a significant boon, fostering accessibility to essential goods and services while cultivating a vibrant nightlife also boosting tourism. However, it is imperative that the government prioritizes safety and security measures, particularly for women, to ensure a safe and enjoyable environment. This extension also provides invaluable support for night shift workers, offering them more options for dining and services during unconventional hours. With careful planning and attention to safety, the extended hours promise to enhance our city's economy, culture, and overall quality of life.”

Good move ! Strictly enforce drink & drive too . There’s more opportunities rising for our auto drivers / cab services . In Bangalore I’ve seen folks are scared to drink and drive on weekends and wilfully take cabs & autos

Let the business owners give premium pay for the employees who are working those extended hours. Because those employees will reach late to their homes, they will have less sleep which will definitely affect their health. So for those extra hours let them be compensated at extra rate per hour.

Normal monthly payment itself is given with much hesitancy, most businesses being in the informal sector, then what can one expect of anything extra, think logically and analyse!😞😞🙏

The major drawback of Mangalore is the lack of public transport. The buses in Mangaluru start to pack up after 7:00PM. If the public transport is also extended then it would help in easing the night business at a very large extend.

Exactly; to learn the ground level situation people have to do their own research, it's very pathetic state of affairs; By Raghuram Rajan:: Where is India going today? Is it surging forward, having just overtaken the United Kingdom to become the fifth-largest economy in the world? Or is it flailing, unable to provide jobs for the millions joining the labour force? What should India do to secure a better future? India is at a crossroads today. Its growth rate, while respectable relative to other large countries, is too low for the jobs our youth need. Intense competition in low-skilled manufacturing, increasing protectionism globally and growing automation make the situation still more difficult. Divisive majoritarianism does not help. India broke away from the standard development path―from agriculture to low-skilled manufacturing, then high-skilled manufacturing and, finally, services―a long time back by leapfrogging the intermediate steps. Rather than attempting to revert to development paths that may not be feasible any more, we must embark on a truly Indian path.*😭😟😭👆🏻🙏

IMO; this type of metro city time extension cannot be extrapolated to a sleepy city like this; the economy math (high overheads) doesn't work in favour of any sort of business except bars, which too only on weekends and special days; already big malls and most other businesses are running slack even during regular hours! Non-availability of public transport after 8pm is another major drawback; auto goons charge upto 3x (no relaxation) even to and fro for emergency visit to hospitals! The above is a very personal opinion based on my perception; please do not believe in the personal opinion opinion

A very good decision. All the youngsters will vote for Congress this time. Only the police department will have reservations on this order. Now they can't go home early and sleep! Overtime will be compensated with extra income from drunken drivers!

Purchasing power of the general public for entry level to medium level goods has gone down dramatically because of obvious reasons and the current high inflation levels (for the rich any changes don't do any difference) 😉!! Please note this is a very personal opinion based on my research and analysis; kindly do your own research!

Not a good idea. This is Mangalore and not Dubai. We don't have the infrastructure yet. I have seen men doing triple ride in Activa at night who are in a group waiting to fight others and cause trouble and the auto drivers charge thrice the usual fare at night.

Before implementing extended hours trading during night, ensure all the roads in the city has lights in working condition on electric poles, every roads, buildings (at least those, operating till late night) are equipped with CCTV / security cameras & increased rounds of police patrolling.
