Diocese of Mangalore expresses concern, seeks justice for St Gerosa School

Media release

Mangaluru, Feb 14: The Diocese of Mangalore has expressed concern over St Gerosa English Higher Primary School witnessing "unfortunate and distressing events on Saturday, February 10 over unfounded allegations against an English teacher there."

"It all started with the circulation of two audio messages via social media accusing English teacher of making disparaging remarks against Hindu religious practices and political leaders during a class in 7th standard.

As the social media messages spread, four parents approached the Headmistress who assured them a thorough investigation on the issue to bring out the truth. However, a group of individuals gathered around the school at 12:30 pm. The headmistress assured them also that a proper inquiry would be conducted to address the matter," the diocese has expressed in a press release.

Further narrating its perspective of the incident, the diocese states,"Later that afternoon, the Sisters from the school wrote to the district administration stating that the audio messages were far from the truth, and they sought protection from any untoward incident.

On Monday, February 12, the situation escalated when officials from the education department visited the school in the morning. Local MLA Vedavyas Kamath led a protest against the school exhibiting disregard for the constitutional process of a fair inquiry.

He insisted on an immediate apology and suspension of English teacher and started harassing women staff, creating an atmosphere of hostility.

During the evening, as children were leaving the campus, the MLA prompted them to chant religious verses and raise slogans against the teacher. The school management, under immense pressure, suspended the teacher, pending an inquiry, to maintain law and order and ensure the safety of the student community. "

It is important to throw light on what actually happened, the release states. "The English teacher was teaching Rabindranath Tagore's poem "Work is Worship" and she was explaining the lines "Whom dost thou worship in this lonely dark corner of the temple with doors all shut?" (English Syllabus of 7th Standard State Board, Karnataka). She neither taught nor stated anything of the sort as went viral on social media," it further said.

In the light of these events, the Diocese of Mangalore has requested the minority department officials, child welfare department, and Women's Commission to conduct a fair inquiry into the matter and investigate the traumatic treatment meted out to the women teachers and children by the MLA.

The Diocese has urged the authorities to probe into the false allegations levelled against English teacher and safeguard her dignity as a teacher and a woman. The diocese also pleaded with all the concerned to protect the interests of minorities, women, and children.

The Diocese of Mangalore has expressed deep concern over the "unfair treatment towards the teacher, students and the school by an elected people's representative and his people."

I'm with Sr Prabha and administration of Jerosa high School at this time when they are being intimated by goondas like vedavyasa and bharath, corporators duo and the extras. I trust the school but not these publicity thirsty goons who rake up controversies at the cost of idiots. They do no worthwhile job for the benefit of their electorate but reach out first to create chaos. Boot the anti social elements out.

As a catholic I'm beyond saddened with our Diocese of Mangalore for its very very very late action and statement on such a serious matter which has affected our entire community. Where is our Bishop???. Why was he not with our St Gerosa nuns while the MLA Vedavyas Kamath was publicly humiliating them. Why is the Diocese of Mangalore not filing FIR on the concerned MLA's and corporators who have maligned and falsely accused our community over and over again. As the head of the diocese he has not even made a public statement on this situation yet!! How disheartening that the Shepherd himself is not leading the flock. Jesus died for us and shed every drop of his blood yet our very own Bishop is not seen or heard giving us courage in times of need whether it was church attacks earlier, or now when our nuns/our catholic community are publicly shamed, humiliated and maligned beyond hurtful words!!

Dear Cynthia, a lot of background work and meetings have happened after this incident. Church representatives were present on ground zero on day 1. No media release from Church will ever happen without being referred to Church lawyers and PROs. Any public statement given has to go through scrutiny by the Bishop and all cause and effects of it will be reviewed. This is a long process, plus the time for the issue to fade down a little. Bishop's presence was not required because PROs are there to do the job. It is easy for us to comment, but the guts and serenity that the nuns had was just superlative, they remained calm. Any other approach to this situation would have made things worse plus there would have been no difference between the saffron team and the school/ Church.

Dear Cynthia madam, Do we have to lower our standards to theirs? This reply (from Diocese) might be slightly delayed but this is a fitting reply. Don't you think if any priest, or Bishop had come to the spot this issue - which is related to school, would have blown out of proportion and would have become communal? And if they had planned so far don't you think they would have had other plans for Bishop or any priest ? (Like Bhiwani, Dadri etc.... no mobile is punished till now) Look, discussion with those people at that time is useless. They don't want to listen to reason. Now it has come to light why Sr.Prabha had to say such things - it's because of Tagore. Those girls who wanted to go against school rules should be allowed to do so by giving them and opportunity to enroll in a school that allows things such as wearing Tilak, religious dressing etc etc. (give them TC right now). But should any student want to attend any school they HAVE TO ABIDE BY THE RULES LAID OUT by the management.

Hi @VM, MANGALORE, @DOMINIC ABRAHAM K J, Mangalore, I apologize if my statement has hurt your or our catholic community sentiments. I also apologize to our clergy if my statement has hurt them particularly to our Beloved Bishop. Thank you for letting me know what I couldn't see clearly. I understand this situation had to be dealt shrewdly and meticulously which they have and kudos to them. I do hold utmost respect for our Beloved Bishop, but I do feel his public presence in such times will have a strengthening impact on our community. and yes like @DOMINIC ABRAHAM K J said his presence could have given comunal tone and would be lowering our standards like of those, which we definetly dont want, but the flock needs its LEADER, his public presence in situation like this. Archbishop Peter Machado gave a public statement so can our Bishop too. Just saying!

As per my understanding (correct me if I am wrong), none of a religious seer from any religion including Hindus has spoken about this incident yet. Maybe that's the reason our Bishop hasn't come in the limelight. Moreover, the Bishop doesn't need to stoop down to the level of these empty vessels who are simply making noise just to garner attention. Equals will understand, these jobless people won't. Also, I am sure he is in contact with the nuns already. A point worth mentioning, thank you to the religious leaders of all communities who understand what the approach needs to be.

Guest teacher to be Sr Prabha. At least then these MLAs and uneducated people would know what it truly means. The poem is so beautiful and apt to be taught to these leaders. Poor guys had no chance to read it before.

Without which also everyone think and act like gods anyway. Also most treat their small children and elders as gods. Who do not want or called to be gods ?

MLA Mr Kamath, showed that he is a politician and who cares more about his own growth in the name of religion. If he was a good human being with clear consciousness he would have respected the religious sisters who give their life for children and sick patients. Do you think Mr Kamath cares for the future of the children of the school? He wants grass root workers to chant slogans and vote for him and he will enjoy the power for few more years. Disturbing communal peace for his personal gains. He may succeed in getting more votes but his actions and poor judgements will come back to haunt him for a very long time.

MLA Vedhavyas Kamath hurt the feelings of many by lining up the Nuns, shouting, yelling and threatening them in front of their students, thereby ripping off their dignity and demoralizing them. The MLAs behavior deemed unprofessional, unethical and criminal. Thank God he did not paraded these women. Even the terrorist may have little respect and sympathy towards the Nuns. It looks like MLA Kamath doesn’t know the sacrifice the Nuns are making for betterment of society and nation. They have to leave home and family for good, help the poor and needy, live a frugal life with prayers and penance. Anyone cannot be a Nun; they have to have a “Calling” for it. What happened in Manipur and lethargic action by the Govt. to control it will have a ripple effect elsewhere. Christian school emphasis on morals and discipline without which children will grow us cone-headed, no matter what level of education they will have. MLA Vedhavyas should be debarred from Assembly and prosecuted for his misbehavior with women. Sr. Prabha should be reinstated quashing summery order under duress from MLA and she should be given due process of law according to the Constitution.

Most unfortunately, the goonda and rowdy culture is spreading like wild fire in our country. When the head of any country comes to power on the back of false promises and lies, it is only natural for those who follow him to learn from what he does. From the chain of recent events, we can safely come to the conclusion that there is a clear cut ploy to divide the country on the basis of religion. Instructions must have been given to the MLAs to use these tactics as the elections are around the corner. These unscrupulous politicians are just not bothered about the future of the students. It would be erroneous to lose sight of the fact that ultimately it is the students who stand to lose. In this particular case, I have seen the video where the MLA prods the children to shout slogans. Have you ever wondered how these children will grow up and behave? The seeds of hatred have been planted in their impressionable minds and the next time they do not get what they want, they will resort to such tactics not only in school but also in their homes. The parents should not fall prey to the divisionary tactics of the politicians. Rather they should do what is required to be done in the interest of their children.

POLARIZATION LEADS TO MORE POLARIZATION - IT SETS OFF A CHAIN REACTION. IT'S SADDENNING TO SEE PEOPLE BLAMING EACH OTHER AND DOING ALL SORTS OF THINGS APART FROM TRYING TO SOLVE THE PROBLEM BUT THESE ARE THE EFFECTS OF POLARIZATION - IT HAS COMPOUNDING EFFECTS AND IT'S SELF PROPELLING. I THINK THE PROBLEM CAN BE ADDRESSED IN THIS WAY: 1) EFFORTS SHOULD BE TAKEN TO ADDRESS THE PROBLEMS FACED BY ALL THE INVOVLED PARTIES, CLARIFYING MISUNDERSTANDING, RESOLVING POTENTIAL CONFLICTS ETC 2) MUTUAL RED LINES SHOULD DRAWN AND MALICIOUS ACTORS SHOULD FACE NECESSARY CONSEQUENCES AND EFFORTS SHOULD BE TAKEN TO DE-ESCALATE THE SITUATION. A FRAMEWORK SHOULD BE ESTABLISHED ON ADDRESSING THESE PROBLEMS. 3) THE MENTAL POISONING CAUSED BY POLARIZING INCIDENTS/MISUNDERSTANDING ETC NEEDS TO BE REVERSED OTHERWISE SUCH INCIDENTS WILL KEEP ARISING INCREASING BOTH IN FREQUENCY AND MAGNITUDE. PEOPLE WHO SPEW HATRED AND RESORT TO VIOLENCE ARE MENTALLY POISIONED. iT COULD BE A COMMON MAN OR A POLITCAL LEADER. iT MAY HAVE BEGUN THROUGH SOME NEGATIVE EXPERINCE OR THROUGH FEAR OR SOME MISUNDERSTANDING BUT THE COMPOUNDING EFFECTS HAVE MAKE THE PERSON EVEN MORE VULNERABLE. DIFFERENT STAGES => FEAR -> ANGER -> HATRED -> VIOLENCE I AM NOT POINTING AT ANYONE OR ANY GROUP OR ORGANIZATION. THIS IS A HUMAN WEAKNESS AND TENDENCY THAT CAUSES PROBLEMS TO EVERYONE. THERE ARE EXTREMEIST WHO ARE PEOPLE WHO ARE MENTALLY POISONED/MENTALLY WEAK PEOPLE/PEOPLE WHO HAVE LEGITIMATE CONCERNS BUT THEY WERE NOT SOLVED AND THEY BECOME EVEN MROE EXTREME IN THEIR THINKING AND ACTIONS DUE TO COMPOUNDING EFFECTS OF POLARIZATION. THESE PROBLEMS ARE COMMON IN OTHER COUNTRIES APART FROM INDIA. EX: USA IS ALSO DEEPLY POLARIZED. IT IS IMPORTANT TO REALIZE THAT LEADERS COULD BE MENTALLY POISONED/VULNERABLE AND THIS CAN CAUSE SPREAD OF WRONG IDEAS AND ACTIONS TO A MUCH BIGGER POPULATION. IF NOT ON THE BASIS OF RELIGION THEN ON THE BASIS OF CULTURE, IF NOT CULTURE THEN SOME OTHER DIFFERENCES BETWEEN DIFFERENT GROUPS/COMMNUNITI

This is truly horrifying to watch how teachers are insulted in front of students. The students should not have been involved in this at all. My family also studying in this school in the past and the rules are same for all ever since. The sad thing was next day the students wore bangles to class and made mockery of teachers. Imagine how disrespectful that is. I hope the lady who made the audio and created this mess is proud of herself.. The situation could have been handled in much matured way.
