Mangaluru: St Aloysius College (Autonomous) gets University status

Media Release

Mangaluru, Jan 25: The University Grants Commission (UGC) and Ministry of Education, government of India, has approved the proposal for the status of Deemed to be University by the well-known St Aloysius College (Autonomous), Mangaluru and granted university status. With this coveted status the institution will from now on be called St Aloysius (Deemed to be University) Mangaluru.

The management of the institution expressed its delight at the prospect of the unique opportunity provided to serve the cause of higher education in this part of the world.

Addressing the media, Fr Praveen Martis SJ, principal of St Aloysius College, expressed his gratitude on this momentous occasion, stating, "In a historic move, St Aloysius Autonomous College becomes St Aloysius Deemed University. With a century-long legacy, this achievement showcases our constant commitment and excellence in education. As Principal, I am grateful for everyone's efforts in achieving this esteemed University status. Our journey includes four successful NAAC accreditation cycles, notable achievements in sports, drama, and culture, collaborations with TEDx, and international events, and numerous memorandums of understanding (MoU). We are also gearing up for admissions to PhD programs, which will commence very shortly."

Fr Melvin Pinto, rector of St Aloysius College, shared the joy, highlighting the college's excellence, and said, "We regularly receive high NAAC ratings, including an A++, the district's highest. Achieving deemed University status aligns with our long-term goals, which have been recognized by the UGC for digital design, graduate outcomes, and placements. According to central regulations, only first-year students will be admitted. This changing advancement represents a new chapter in our institution's history. We are grateful to our alumni and supporters and look forward to an ongoing rise as St Aloysius Deemed University."

Addressing questions from the media regarding the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) and other regulations, Fr Praveen Martis said, "We follow the Central regulations, and deemed-to-be University students will only be first-year students, while the second and final year students will be under the affiliated university. Admissions will start from now onwards, and the academic year will commence in June."

"The UGC and the ministry of education, after making a thorough study of the college proposal on various parameters like physical and digital infrastructure, curricular design, research and innovation, graduate outcomes, student attainment levels, placements, vision and mission of the institution and its impact on the society along with the considerations of the higher levels of successive NAAC accreditations, NIRF and distinctive rankings and achievements, has granted the university status to the college. This status enables the institution to create a sustainable ecosystem driven by globally competitive curricula, high-end research, innovations and entrepreneurship initiatives. It provides unprecedented opportunities to explore possibilities for robust collaborations with regional, national and global partners to facilitate interdisciplinary, multidisciplinary and trans-disciplinary undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral studies with joint and twinning programmes providing cross cultural learning exposure to students", her added.

On this occasion, Alwyn D'Sa, registrar of St Aloysius College, members of the Aloysius Board, and other teaching and non-teaching staff were present.

St Aloysius is a college that is operated by Jesuit priests and I am proud that this institution has achieved the status of a university. There are numerous Catholic institutions in and around Mangalore that are run by religious, but unfortunately, many lack a professional approach and fail to reach the highest standards. Among these institutions, Fr. Muller, which boasts a history of over 150 years, is now nowhere to be found in the list of the top 500 medical schools in India. Many other new managements, such as Yenepoya University, Srinivasa University, and AJ University (soon) , have also emerged. However, it is commendable that the Jesuits demonstrate a complete dedication to excellence, setting aside any personal ambitions.
