Customs officials confiscate gold worth over Rs 98 lac at Mangaluru airport, arrest one

Mangaluru, Jan 9: The customs officials at the international airport in the city confiscated 1579 grams of gold worth Rs 98,68,750 from a passenger who arrived from Abu Dhabi.

The said passenger arrived at the airport on January 8 by Abu Dhabi – Mangaluru Air India Express flight. The customs officials got suspicious with the manner in which the passenger was walking and subjected him to body frisking. A beep sound emerged from his pelvis region. On further examination through x-ray it was found that five oval shaped objects were concealed in his rectum.

After the same was extracted by heating process gold in paste form weighing 1.579 kg worth Rs 9868750 was recovered from the passenger. He was arrested and produced before magistrate.
