Jayalalithaa Fulfils One More Poll Promise with Nationalised Cable TV

Chennai, Sep 3: In a bid to put an end to the monopoly enjoyed by cable TV businesses in the state, chief minister J Jayalalithaa on Friday September 2 relaunched the Tamil Nadu Arasu Cable TV Coproration Limited which had earlier been out of service.

The services were launched from Fort St George through teleconferencing. Jayalalithaa took potshots at the DMK and said that now the monopoly of a single family had ended.

The network was launched in all districts with the exception of Chennai due to the conditional access system.

This marks yet another fulfilment of the poll promises she had made back in April assembly elections. But the USP of the service is that it is nationalised, and will be available to viewers at a nominal fee of Rs 70 per month for 90 channels.

During her previous tenure, she had tried to nationalise the cable TV business, but could not do so as the then governor had said that it was the centre's concern.

As many as 34,344 cable operators and MSOs who have at present 1.45 crore connections, have registered themselves with the TACTV so far.

The move has come as a big relief to viewers who had to earlier pay Rs 200 or so every month for cable TV connection.
