Heavy Rains and Landslide Disrupt Konkan Rail Services

Ratnagiri (Maharashtra), Sep 3 (IANS): Incessant rains in the Konkan region triggered a fresh landslide at the Pomendi cutting near Ratnagiri, disrupting movement of trains on the Konkan Railway yet again, an official said.

?Train operations on this route have been suspended indefinitely as part of a hillock collapsed in Pomendi,? the official said.

?Our team is trying to restore services but incessant rains are an obstruction,? he added.

The Pomendi area has turned into a problem zone for Konkan railway, owing to its vulnerability to landslides during heavy rains. This is the fifth such incident in and around Pomendi in the last two months.

On July 17, train services along this route were disrupted when a landslide at the same spot left the tracks waterlogged.

Though restoration work was undertaken immediately, it was hampered when a 50-metre section of a retaining wall gave way the next day.
