Over 99% mobile phones used in India are manufactured locally: Union minister Ashwini Vaishnaw

Bengaluru, Nov 28 (IANS): Union minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said on Monday that 99.2 per cent of the mobile phones used in the country are manufactured locally.

"The mobile manufacturing industry has crossed $44 billion worth," he underlined.

Speaking to reporters after visiting the Tata iPhone plant in Tamil Nadu's Hosur, Vaishnaw slammed the Opposition for "still thinking that the mobile phones used in the country are imported".

"They (Opposition) don't know that 99.2 per cent of the mobiles used here are manufactured in India. Presently, there are many cell phone manufacturing units in the country," he stated.

India has an ambitious goal to produce electronic goods worth more than $300 billion by 2025-26 and the manufacturers are encouraged by schemes and subsidies, the Union Minister said.

India is surpassing China in the production of mobiles and marching ahead, he underlined.

"Apple increased the production of its major iPhones in India last year. Cupertino Tech is contemplating raising the production in India to $40 billion in four to five years," Vaishnaw added

“In the last nine and half years, we have reached the stage of exporting electronic products. There is considerable progress in the semiconductor sector. Recently, Google announced that it will start producing Pixel smartphones here. This would prove to be a boost for India's ambition to emerge as a global manufacturing hub,” he elaborated.

Earlier, Vaishnaw visited and inspected the Yeshwantpur Railway station in Bengaluru and declared that it is going to emerge as a world-class station. Bengaluru South MP Tejasvi Surya also joined the Union Minister to inspect the progress of the redevelopment of Yeshwantpur Railway Station, undertaken by the Central Government at a cost of Rs 366 crore.

"Yeshwantpur is a crucial transport hub in Bengaluru undergoing significant redevelopment aimed at transforming it into a world-class station. Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision to integrate such stations into multi-modal transport hubs will go a long way in addressing rapid urbanization and population growth,” he said.

"The redevelopment is being carried out by keeping in mind the increased footfall in the coming decades and the integration of suburban rail. Once completed, it will also feature a roof plaza for recreational activities and showcasing local products. Glad to note that works are proceeding smoothly without causing hindrance to station operations," Surya said.

I have so far used some 10 different phones. All of them bear foreign brand names. Out of them two were bought abroad and the packaging clearly says they were manufactured in Korea and Taiwan. All the others have their instruction manual printed in foreign country and outer packaging has a sticker over a foreign print saying that it is made in India. As most of the readers have pointed out, these are imported and reassembles and re-packaged in India. And our Union Minister says 99% phones in use in India are made in India! I want to ask the Prime Minister: Who is the moorkhon ka sardar now?

India is gradually becoming more involved in the production of iPhone parts, not just the assembly of imported parts. So, it will be a long way for India to come up with near 100% indigenous parts. People are not fools to believe what politicians tell for winning elections.

He is right that assembly of all phones including Samsung (since quite a few years now) and Apple have moved out of China to India. Chinese also are assembling in India to benefit from the cost differential due to tax breaks. However, India is yet to reach the capability of having every part of the phone be built from scratch and China too did not have that capability. China was also only in the assembling mode. Please search for articles on tear down of each phone and you will realize that it is assembly of parts made all over the world.

Dear Roland, Mangalore, Looking at the comments here which can best be termed as "festival of ignorance", publicity and taking credit probably is highly desirable because make in India initiative is the prime reason behind that valid numbers that the minister is quoting. It is so much so that, Chinese are already calling iphones as "curry smelling iphones" and why people in China should not purchase iphones. I would also recommend that people read about India Semiconductor Initiative and the quantum of funds allocated there. On the same note, we can however, question the honorable minister why cost of iphone is so high compared to US for example if that is manufactured in India. Apple has given its own excuse. But nevertheless.

Becoming a true superpower requires a mindset focused on designing and developing with science and logic. Unfortunately, I don't foresee this happening in the near future, as a significant portion of Indians still invest a considerable amount of time in appeasing mythological gods and goddesses, attending churches and mosques, and engaging in conflicts over vague ideologies

Dear Harold Dcunha, Mangalore, India I can answer your question. Samsung and most Chinese assemble their phones in Noida. Samsung's largest assembly unit is there. Apple gets its phone assembled through 2 vendors and even Tata has joined the fray. The Taiwan vendors have it done few in Chennai plant and rest in Bidadi plant. By next year, Apple plans to move out completely from China. All of it are creating jobs big time. Bidadi plant was in the news for wrong reasons, the workers revolted and there were pilferage of expensive iphones not that long ago.

Absolute rubbish. He himself must be using a imported mobile. When there are so many ‘ desh bhakths’ living/ working outside their country do you think that they or their family members will be using locally manufactured mobile phone. It’s a sad story that these educated persons speak the language of the uneducated.
