Landslide blocks Konkan Railway, thousands stranded

Mumbai, Aug 30 (IANS) A major landslide blocked tracks in a section of the Konkan Railway Tuesday, hitting services between Mumbai and the southern states and leaving thousands of people who were going home for the Ganeshotsav festival stranded. There were no casualties.

A retaining wall, around 20 metres long, came crashing on the railway tracks near Pomendi, Ratnagiri district, around 225 km south of Mumbai, at 8.15 a.m., a Konkan Railway spokesperson said.

All trains from Kerala, Karnataka, Goa, Maharashtra and beyond to Gujarat and New Delhi have been held up at various points on the route till the tracks are cleared at Pomendi and the adjoining sections.

"Our team of engineers has rushed there with the required equipment. Work has started on a war-footing to restore services," the official told IANS.

Despite torrential rains which continued for the fifth consecutive day in the coastal Konkan region and the Western Ghats, he expressed optimism that services would be restored by afternoon.

Thousands of Mumbaikars rushing to their native villages and towns in the Konkan districts have been stranded due to the train disruptions.

Many preferred to choose the road to ensure they reach on time for the 10-day Ganeshotsav festival starting Thursday.

This is the third time in the current monsoon that landslides have disrupted services on the Konkan Railway network in the Pomendi ghat section.

The official attributed it to heavy rains, loose soil conditions, falling rocks and stones which damaged or blocked the railway tracks.

He said the Konkan Railway is implementing remedial measures in a phased manner to arrest the problems by next monsoon.

Meanwhile, intermittent showers and heavy rains continued to lash Mumbai and its surrounding areas throughout Monday night. But there were no reports of waterlogging from any part of the city.

    @Durgadas Suvarna, MLORE/BLORE.
I don’t think any Church or Mosque has received a single rupee. Any ways we are not interested in money made from frauds. I am sure your temples will also return that soiled money. Tough I live in Mumbai and GOA my heart is still in Karnataka and now that Yeddurappa and Reddy are going behind bars I have started making fresh investments in Mangalore and Bangalore.

Durgadas Suvarna, MLORE/BLORE i agree with you. I will say that Jossy and his team members are not matured enough to comment in this forum. I had seen last time there was a news about Krishna Janmastami celebrations in mangalore, but most of the commentators especially working in abroad forgot about the actual news and were discussing more about BD/Ramasene/VHP etc. This clearly indicates that they always wish to listen to bad news about such organizations and actually they are not concerned about mangalore.

@Jossey Saldanha, Mumbai / Mapusa regarding Yeddy i am not supporting his scams. When it comes to development he has definately concentrated more on good development works in our state which other previous CM's couldn't do in the past. Also why do you have more problem when Yeddy grants donation to temple. He also granted funds to churches and mosque which the people like you call it has drama, eyewash etc etc. I have gone through your comments most of the times by which i can clearly say that you are actually not concerned about Karnataka. You purposefully wish wrong things to happen in Karnataka so that you get a chance to blame BJP state govt.

WE THE SOUTH INDIAN SHOULD THANKS TO RAILWAY MINISTER FOR INTRODUCTION OF KONKAN RAILWAY.

AND SORRY TO SAY THAT THEY HAVE LAYED ONLY SINGLE LINE. DURING THE JOURNEY WE HAVE TO WASTE LOT OF TIME FOR BYPASS. (TO ALLOW OTHER TRAINS TO MAKE WAY TO PASS.)

WHY CANNT RAILWAY MINISTER LAY SECOND LINE SO THAT UP AND DOWN TRAINS RUN SMOOTHLY.

SO, I APPEAL TO ALL MANGLORIANS / SOUTH INDIANS COME FORWARD AND REQUEST THE RAILWAY MINISTER LAY THE SECOND LINE.

THEY WOULD HAVE BEEN LAYED THE SECOND LINE DURING THE THAT TIME ONLY.

BUT OUR INDIAN DO NOT THINK OF FUTURE. BECUASE THEY NEED REPEAT ORDER. THAT IS WAHT CORRUPTION.

NOW DONOT WORRY, ANNA IS THERE.

    THANKS

I know Nagesh writes silly but I love to antagonize silly commentators.
Mr. S.M.Krishna at least developed Bangalore but what about your own Yeddurappa?
Donating public money to temples and developing himself and family members?
Just wait and watch. Law is catching up with his misdeeds.

You have seen Natural calamity in japan and recent cyclone Irene, This is nothing in front of that. When it rains heavily landslides are common. You cannot blame any party person. Only solution I can suggest is either send Nagesh Nayak to Italy or make him PM. This man cannot see the problems from any other angle but Political and that too one sided which is dangerous for readers forum. Come on Nagesh grow up, the way Yuvraj grow up, Yeddy grow up and resigned.

Jossey Saldanha, Mapusa / Mumbai the same like you. You blame Yeddy if you have any personal problem, but the problem with the like you is that you cannot accept Nagesh Nayak's silly comments. So if you cannot accept silly comments of Nagesh Nayak please stop giving silling comments from today.

@Joel, Sydney/ Mangalore you are sitting in Sydney and judging the development work of SM Krishna and Modiji. SM Krishna might have developed Bangalore to some extent, but he ignored the other parts of Karnataka state. He could'nt show his face to other parts of Karnataka place in one of the election campaings, but Modiji has developed entire Gujarat state. So would request you not to comment with half knowlege that too sitting in Sydney.
