UAE-India passenger ship service expected to begin soon; tickets at Rs 10,000, baggage limit 200 kg

Daijiworld Media Network – Dubai (MS)

Dubai, Sep 19: President of Indian Association Sharjah said that passenger ship travel between Kerala and UAE will be launched soon with ticket prices at just AED 442 (Rs 10,000) and an allowance of 200 kg of baggage. The ship is expected to reach Kerala in three days’ time from UAE.

A report from Khaleej Times says that the service is likely to begin before the school holidays in December. The aim is to reduce the burden of expats living in UAE from paying astronomical air fares.

The approval from the union government is awaited. Representatives from Kerala are likely to meet the concerned central government minister in coming days. If everything goes well, the trial run will be held in November.

The ticket prices range from AED 442 to AED 663 depending on the time taken to complete the journey. During peak season there may be variation in the prices.

Passengers are allowed to take 200 kg of baggage with them. It will take three days for the ship to reach Kerala from UAE. In addition, excellent food and entertainment facilities will be offered to passengers. The ship is expected to carry 1250 passengers.

In the beginning the ship will call at two ports of Kochi and Beypore. There is also a third port that is being looked into according to Rahim. Vizhinjam is the likely destination for the third port option.

Kerala government is supporting the project which is run by Sharjah Indian association and a private company called Ananthpuri shipping and logistics private limited. Non-resident Keralites affairs (NORKA) is also a part of the project.

They should include Mumbai & Mangalore as well. It will run full both ways especially since baggage allowance is 200 kgs. In addition they can add some additional commercial cargo to earn more. Sounds like a good idea

Central government headed by Modiji never thinks of people of nation. He is always worried about corporates, worried about corporates interest, thereby I don't think they will get license for the marvellous project.

I appreciate the efforts and far thinking of the Keralites. If the service succeeds then perhaps it will reach many ports from the gulf to various ports in India. For a family of 5 or more it is considerable savings and they can carry officially a thousand kilos. Plus there will be cheaper way to ship back to your home country your personal Furniture or even a good car to India upon the termination of contract/stay in the UAE. Try selling your stuff locally and will only get you small change for your hard earned money.

Lets see how long it will last. If you do the math. Ticket cost AED 450 . Total passengers 1250. If the ship travels full it will make roughly AED 562,500 one way. which is roughly USD 150,000. The average fuel costs for a cruise liner is about USD 80,000 per day. The journey will take 3 days and in addition, excellent food and entertainment facilities will be offered to passengers. So , where will the profits come from ???

I think fuel cost of 80,000 doller per day may not be, SO also fuelling may be done in UAE. But I think, Indian Airlines, Corporates, Indian Central Ministry may not give permission. & /or may objects.

While this initiative is commendable, i do not see this getting much success. For any expat returning to kerala or mangalore from middle east time is of essence. He or she would want to spend maximum time in his native place. Three days to reach is like half of his vacation and if you add three days to return the whole duration is spent traveling back and forth. And sea sickness is common for infrequent travellers by sea. So i dont think airtravel has any competition from this

Aswin Perla you are right. Not all can travel by ship-Ship sickness one second long travel loss of your limited leave.mostly if one gets sick in ship all have to suffer.like diarrhoea or yellow fever .Medical emergency will be delayed .In Air you reach fast and more comfortable only luggage problem. But bad connection to mangalore. One who leaves gulf for good can go with ship.Even ticket fair is also not very less ?Yes you can choose. For us this is not a option.

Indians from all other States must learn what is unity (Irrespective of cast creed & religion) and support for all Keralites from the government and their organization or Business community. This service is greatly appreciated, when Air India is trying to dominate air travel and make passengers to agree and oblige to their rule and control authority. When I came to Kuwait I had a voyage by Akbari Ship from Bombay, and it took 15 days to reach Kuwait. Half of passenger had sea sickness and fatigue. I fully support such a service and people of young & middle age can enjoy such voyage and having fun.
