Responsibility of state governments to reduce crime against women: Anurag Thakur

New Delhi, Jul 23 (IANS): Union Minister Anurag Thakur on Sunday said that any atrocities on women are very painful and added that it is the responsibility of the state governments to reduce crime against women.

"Any atrocities on women are painful whether it is any state. It is the responsibility of the state governments to reduce crime against women," Thakur told reporters on the sidelines of an event here.

He said besides the government, it is also the duty of the society to work in this direction.

The Minister, who criticised the non-BJP ruled states including Congres-led Rajasthan government and Mamata Banerjee-led West Bengal government over the recent alleged incidents of crime against women on Saturday, attacking the Opposition, further said,"There should be a discussion in the House (Parliament) on these (such incidents). All the parties should attend. I once again appeal to Opposition not to run away from discussion, and also not to politicise such sensitive issues."

Earlier, senior BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad slammed the Opposition and had said, "The Manipur incident is unfortunate. Prime Minister (Narendra Modi) has condemned it and assured strict action (against the culprits). We wanted discussion on this in both Houses of Parliament as it is a serious matter for us. It is a matter of great pain that the Congress and Opposition were arguing on the rules under which discussion would take place."

On Friday, the BJP claimed that Manipur-like gruesome incident had also happened with one of its nominee-candidates in the recently-concluded Panchayat elections in West Bengal.

When asking votes BJP says vote for double engine govt. Now manipur in deep crisis, Modi govt shrugs off responsibility to say, it is state govt job. Intelligent kannadigas booted out BJP, knowing clearly when 1 engine isn't safe, you need 2nd engine as backup, so BJP is bogus. But, why educated folks of DK and udupi voted for BJP is a mystery.

If Central Government acts like a mute spectator, then these things happen. BJP must take the responsibility to the riots happening in Manipur. Non BJP Governments of states are taking action immediately.

What happens when the government is termed double engine but one engine is busy in state election followed by globe trotting ? If what happened in Manipur took place before two months, that is exactly the time around when Karnataka campaign took place. How come the government failed in setting priorities ??

FYI, any crime is unfortunate and unavoidable but what is govt doing to contain it and what steps govt is taking for its consequences and how the law is applied to from happening in future. What happened in Gujrat in 2002 and in Manipur now is in mega scale. Access to sophisticated weapons, ammunition and logistics, which could not be possible for ordinary people without the full support of the state. So, what happened in non-BJP states is in individual level and appropriate action has been taken unbiased but in BJP ruled states it’s govt sponsored misadventure. In W. Bengal police have confirmed no such incident has taken place. It’s BJP propaganda with doctored video footage of Tukde Tukde gang.

understood, minister. but when the state abdicates its role, should there not be prompt corrective action from something called the Centre? please could you tell the nation why both state and centre have jointly failed? and still it is only 'bhashans', and as far as is known, no meaningful ground level action.
