Mumbai Lawyer Demands CBI Probe into Triple Blasts

Mumbai, Jul 18 (IANS): A Mumbai lawyer Monday filed a public interest litigation in the Bombay High Court to demand a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the July 13 triple bombing that left 19 people dead and 129 injured.

Contending that last week's serial bombings were a matter of "international importance", advocate V.P. Patil told IANS: "The issue should be with the centre since it was an attack on the nation and not just the city of Mumbai. Moreover, the CBI is listed as No. 8 in the schedule of the union and hence, legally, it should be assigned to probe the blasts."

He said it was up to the CBI to seek the help of any other agency it deemed fit in the probe.

The attacks, Patil said, were condemned across the world. "Hence, it is also a matter of utmost international importance, so the entire investigation must be entrusted to the CBI."

He has also referred to the death of a suspect, Faiz Usmani, during the course of investigations by the Mumbai police Sunday.
