200 units of free electricity to all including tenants, says Siddaramaiah

Bengaluru, Jun 6 (IANS): Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Tuesday announced that 200 units of free electricity will be provided to all domestic consumers, including those living in rented accomodations in the state.

While interacting with reporters after garlanding the statue of former Chief Minister D. Devraj Urs on his 41st death anniversary, Siddaramaiah stated "There is no need to pay for the electricity bills up to 200 units. This will apply to even those who live on rent. It will not be applicable to commercial buildings," he reiterated.

The guidelines for availing the benefit for Gruha Jyothi scheme, under which free electricity will be provided, specified that the beneficiary must mandatorily link the Customer ID and Account ID with the Aadhaar card. The guideline also mentioned that if the consumer has more than one connection in his name, only one connection would be considered.

These guidelines created confusion and raised a question mark over the majority of people who live in rented accommodations across the state and electricity connections to their houses will be in the name of their house owners who own multiple properties.

K.J. George, Minister for Energy explained that since the majority of the people who live in rented accommodations have voted the Congress to power, the government will protect their interests and ensure that even they get the benefit of Gruha Jyothi scheme.

The Congress government has also merged the Bhagya Jyothi, Kuteera Jyothi and Amruta Jyothi schemes into Bhagya Jyothi scheme in Karnataka.

To be fair to Siddu, I put my electricity bill under the microscope. If what he says is true and implemented as I have understood (I may be wrong), I see that my monthly electricity bill will come down by Rs. 1000 even with hiked tariff. Again, I don't know how it will be eventually computed because seeing is believing. I am capable of paying that balance Rs. 1000 per month. Question is who will pay if I did not, which comes at an annual cost to treasury of Rs. 12000 from per user like me? Rs. 2.89 as I computed alone will not be able to offset cost of free electricity for the electricity board. Alternately, this is a golden opportunity for electricity boards to seriously consider reduction of distribution loss from current 70% to theoretical 30% (eddy current losses). I am OK to give Siddu a chance with this experiment. But because it is political and there is no buy in from the babus, this will eventually get diluted. Let us face it, Karnataka can only generate more funds if more people drink alcohol or convert Karnataka to concrete jungle. Both these methods are not sustainable. For the tenure of Siddu, it may be possible. We cannot build nations using freebies. Higher education is costly to make primary education affordable. Fertilizers still enjoy some subsidy (Europeans give subsidy for not tilling land). But these are artificial measures. They can purely be political tools for limited period. They cannot be a permanent measure from a pratical sense.

siddharamaiah clearly said those household people who don't want freebies (it is our own tax paid money) they can give up and can pay electricity bill. whereas while bjp was in power, 40% corruption in procurements/tenders, and in construction works. It is our own tax paid money fully utilized by bjp mla's and m.p's, it is our tax paid money made gulum/ಗುಳುಂ by bjp.

Get ready for JPC to prove Modi’s cronies have been given amnesty on Lakhs of crores rupees loans. Don’t file fabricated case on a person to disqualify him from parliament who raises voice for JPC. What more evidence you need from a person who evades to discuss the matter face to face but put hurdles on it. Only the guilty do it.

Joe Brother. Your average consumption for the last 12 months will be taken into account . If its lets say 100 units, you will get 10% on that,, So 110 units will be free. If your average is 150 , Only 165 units will be free. Not more. Moreover you have to register yourself in the app first for the authorities to access your details. This is what I understood from the KEB rep a few hours back. May change as its still being reviewed and studied .No order has been passed it.

If the govt is giving freebies and incentives freely it has all the right to put conditions so that free money is not misused and exploited in bad hands. You can also avail this benefit provided if you have valid official documents which is also a necessary condition besides other.

CM is bending to the pressure of the opposition and days are not too far that there are lots of mess in the freebies implementation. Lot of people will get disappointed due to missing of some or other benefits and anti incumbency will be inevitable. Not a good sign for Karnataka.

Sidda...please send all congress workers to villages so that poor people register there name in app and avail the facilities. It's now become a cumbersome job to them and become headache for those who are illiterate. Better would have given them money for there needs and transfered directly to there account would have much useful.
