Mamata visits wildlife part, to sign accord Monday

Sukna (West Bengal), July 17 (IANS) A day ahead of signing the historic agreement for the restoration of peace in Darjeeling, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee Sunday reached the district and spent a leisurely day interacting with locals and visiting a wildlife sanctuary.

Banerjee reached Siliguri Sunday afternoon and headed for the Sukna forest bungalow.

On her way, she stopped her car and interacted with locals who had lined up on both sides of the road.

Banerjee then met north Bengal's Trinamool Congress leadership at the bungalow.

Accompanied by union Minister of State for Shipping Mukul Roy and North Bengal Development Minister Gautam Deb, she then left for the Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary - one of the largest of eastern India, near Siliguri.

The chief minister stopped her car at various small settlements just outside the sanctuary and interacted with the villagers.

After passing through the jungle terrain for about an hour, Banerjee reached one of the watchtowers of the sanctuary and talked to forest officials.

When one of the photographers gathered there shouted for a picture, the 56-year-old leader joked: "You don't know that they (tigers) don't like to be disturbed. Don't disturb them. If they get angry they will eat you people."

Banerjee is scheduled to be in Pintal village in Sukna Monday afternoon, where the tripartite agreement will be signed in the presence of Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) leadership and union Home Minister P. Chidambaram.
