Heavy Rains Slow Down Life in Mumbai

Mumbai, Jul 13 (IANS): Low-lying areas were submerged, trains were running late and traffic on major roads was reduced to a snail's pace as overnight rains continued in Mumbai Wednesday.

While suburban trains on the Western Railway, Central Railway and Harbour Line were running late by 15-30 minutes, traffic on all major roads and the two highways moved at a slow pace, delaying office-goers and students.

The subways at Santa Cruz, Andheri, Kandivli and Dahisar were flooded and closed for several hours, leading to traffic jams in the surrounding areas.

Low-lying areas in Borivili, Malad, Jogeshwari, Santacruz and other suburbs were flooded as rains continued to lash the city.

Operations at the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport were near normal with most flights arriving or departing as per schedule save for a Spicejet flight coming from Chennai that was diverted to Ahmedabad in the morning.

However, when visibility improved, it returned and landed here safely at 10.30 a.m., an official said.
