Panaji: Special Panel to Screen Visitors' Outfits at Basilica

Daijiworld Media Network

Panaji, Jul 12: A special panel of officers has been set up to screen outfits of pilgrms or tourists visiting the state's famous Basilica of Bom Jesus before they enter the holy structure.

Rector of the basilica Fr Savio Barette said that starting from September 2011 visitors who are found dressed scantily or inappropriately will be provided with shawls to cover themselves which will have to be returned after the visit.

Barretto added that the dress code would not only be applicable to tourists but also to the other pilgrims.

The authorities at the basilica that has around 10,000 people visiting the premises  took this measure after recieving complaints about scantily clad tourists and the nuisance created by visitors during Holy Mass.

The church management has also decided to prohibit photography on the premises as visitors click photographs, talk loudly and create a racket disturbing pilgrims.

The Basilica, situated at Old Goa, 9 kms away from here, is considered to be one of the best examples of Baroque architecture in India. The church is known for housing the relics of St Francis Xavier, a patron saint of Goa, who died in 1552.

The church maintained by the Archaeological survey of India is also notified under the World Heritage Monuments.

Mahalsa Narayani Temple and Mangueshi Temple situated within the neighbourhood, 20 kms away from here have already imposed a dress code on visitors and pilgrims.

Better late than never. I wanted to bring this subject up since 5 years when I saw that tourist cuddle each other inside the holy place. I had gone to find any authority to complain abt it. but cud not find anyone there. now i am happy that the holy place will be respected. Fr. pls arrange to charge a minimum fee for the shawl and keep a refund deposit and money back - afta the shawl is returned back. also it wud be better if such scantity of clothes is prohibited during all our mass services all over goa.

Good decision. I thing all the churches all over the world should follow. We are wearing all types of clothes everywhere, atleast to church, we should wear decent clothes. HIndus wear decent body covering clothes when they are going to temples, even muslims too, why not we christians. People are pointing us always for our dress code specially to church. We dress and go to church like as if we are going for a party. I think it is good step, not screening but pressuring the people to wear decent clothes while visiting the churches. After all it is a Holy place. We should know to give respect . We are not going loose anything by wearing decent clothes to church. It is one type of sacrifice. To gain something, we should sacrifice something.

    Good move...
Adam n Eve hid themselves in shame after eating the forbidden fruit.

This generation has eaten more than that so yeah we need more clothes to cover ourselves...

The church authorities have taken a good decision and all the churches should follow the same example and should turn back people dressed in some undecent way. No shawls should be provided to cover their shame. They should know how to respect the creator our Lord Jesus Christ.

Please do not impose dress code on
the people who wants to pray/visit the church. My simple advise to the church authority to
put bannars around the church & inform the same to the sournding area.

This rule should be imposed on every church, especially a strict dress-code should be adhered to, during our weddings brides and bride-maids. Many a times we see they are very very vulgar looking.

Every religious place is considered holy, therefore proper dress coding should be enforced and regulations to enter in holy place should be displayed at the entrance.
