Another Blow for Ashwini: 'B' Sample Tests Positive, May Face Two-year Ban

Daijiworld Media Network

New Delhi, Jul 11: In a yet another major blow to star athlete Ashwini Akkunji, the pride of South Canara who had won gold medals in the last Commonwealth Games and the Asiad, her 'B' samples have also been tested positive.

With this, her dreams of making it to the London Olympics may well be over, as she is faced with a two-year ban.

Along with Ashwini's, the 'B' sampled of another athlete, Priyanka Pawar too tested positive and she too is facing similar fate.

"We have received papers from the NADA that both Ashwini and Priyanka's 'B' samples have tested positive for the same anabolic steroids found in their 'A' sample," Athletics Federation of India director M L Dogra said.

The National Anti-Doping Agency will hold a hearing of the cases before deciding on the ban. For now, the two have been suspended.

If banned for two years, Ashwini will also miss the forthcoming World Championships in Daegue, South Korea for which she has qualified.

Earlier, public sector Corporation Bank having its headquarters in Mangalore, had withdrawn advertisement features involving Ashwini, its brand ambassador. With the 'B' sample also testing postive, Ashwini's services with the bank too hang in balance.

It's very unfortunate to hear the news. But let us not pass judgement on Ashwini, coz we are not the ones to judge her. We have to wait n watch for the panel decission. What the coaches do with athletes to perform, what food supplement is given to them in the form of tablets, what it contains, would not be clearly n fully known to the athletes themselves. Though they are not 100% innocent, blaming the athletes outright is not justified I think, in my point of view.

It's unfortunate that Sports Pride of our region is facing a trial within no time of her rising to fame. Let us be with Ashwini in her bad times as well, as we were with her in her good times.

Most of us are aware that it is a bitter, hidden fact that almost all performing athletes take banned substances, few get caught and few are lucky, not to get caught. It doesnt mean all others who are not caught are innocent. Under what circustances these athletes are tested positive and are exposed is also a big question.
We wish Ashwini Good Luck in all her trials and tribulations.

I don't know whom to blame... But as P.T.Usha said TOI (http://articles.timesofindia.indiatimes.com/2011-07-05/athletics/29738200_1_pt-usha-athletes-indian-sports) "Most of the athletes take nearly a year to improve from 55 seconds to 54 in women's 400m but we saw most of our athletes in the 4x400m relay squad 55 to 51 seconds in just a year after repeated visits to Ukraine, which I learn has hardly got any good facilities," it is quite clear what does she mean....

    Hello Rayan,

Nice to read you comment. I hope you are not sending your children to school because they will have RED MARKS in marks cards, you will listen to complaints from teacher etc., Do a routine work-out what ashwini does for month and you will feel it.... and she is practicing since her high school and also away from the family!!!

Even though she goes to the London Olympics, she can not get a gold or atleast brongze, She will be settling with some last positions. Unless an athlete improve their timings in local level, they can not make miracles in bigger level.Better not to go. Like Anju boby george, who could not even get ther personal best record in the Olympics, settled with 6th place.

This incident is very unfortunate. Nobody wants to spoil their own career. She might have been taken the supplement with no knowledge of steroids in it.

Eventhough this incident is one black spot in her career, nobody can take away her achievements. At this hour of her distress, we all should support her so that she can bounce back again after ban on her is over.

    Good luck Ashwini!

    Ban on Indian Atheletes
these things are definitely conspiracy of some people who don't want India to shine.I request media people not to degrade individuals so much that they cannot getup again in their life. She may be victim of somebody's conspiracy. Before degrading somebody like this please think about our corrupt politicians who are involved in scams. i think this is nothing when compared to those crimes. She requires counseling rather than putting salt on the wound.

I know ashwini closely, we had done one athletic practice in Alvas together. She is simple girl. There is some where some thing went wrong in this. With or Without Knowledge is happened. And culprit should dealt with the strict rules and regulations. It may ashwini, her coach, team mates who insisted for the short cut rout for the success etc., So that SPIRIT OF SPORTS WILL REMAIN.

I feel very bad for a great athlete, but the rule is simple "Ignorance of countrys law has no excuse". My personal message to all: To get the success is tough to maintain it is the toughest. This is one of the case. Hope if she would have appointed her own coach, finance advicers,PRO, Advisers etc this would not have happend.Well this is not Cricket with high money, so i dont know whether she can afford. But her future was a road of fortunes, she was a golden girl, she may be never realised. Two years ban means over and out. I only remember Ben Johnson from Canada, he is a history in bad books when he returned after drug scandals. I feel sorry for her. But she has to pay for it and this is the bad patch on her though she proves she is innocent.

    @Nancy,Belman-
Certainly they knew which food to eat & which they shouldn't touch. But the forbidden fruit tastes better & gives better results than training only with inherent drawbacks. Once they reach a certain level their performances just plateau-however hard they try. Sometimes they donot qualify for any international competitions with cut-off levels raised constantly.
Around 25 years back coaches from west complained the Olympic conductors about East German athletes. The female swimmers were lean & almost looked like male athletes, with their voices coarse like males. Their coach countered- they are here to swim & not to sing or to model. They were doped with Testastorone harmones which gave them advantage over all other female competitors.
Now the Cat is out of the bag, no use defending them by blaming others-just becuase they are from our neighbourhood.

I think we should wait for the investigation reports conducted by Dr. Jayaraman. I hope Dr. Jayaraman (also served WADA) and team surely identify the culprits at SAI who were responsible for this menace. We cannot blame the athlete because they are not specialist in Medicine. Sports Medicine specialists are need of the hour in Indian Sport administration to educate athletes, coaches and the administrator.Otherwise, innocent athletes always the target of foolish Sports administrators in India.

Taking anabolic steroids and testing it is a "cat and mouse" game...some get caught some get away with it...if this anabolic steroid is detected by dope test... they will make another which cannot be detected for some time....

As I said before all international athlets were taking this in 80s and 90s without being caught!!!

Ashwini we felt very sad. But still in spite of this incident, I am with u during this hour of your downfall.
As the saying goes ' winners has many fathers and looser are like orphans".
Might be there was neither proper, qualified doctor nor good coach. Being involved in sports, I do know the quantum of corruption, rudeness of the ors, partiality and all odd things.

The same people who had praised u, some of them now will spread bad mouth much faster. Good things fade much faster and unfortunately society enjoys talking ill of others. Get up and start practise, without ceasing.

My best wishes are always with u. In spite of your downfall, you are still an achiever which many unable to achieve it. Shortly people will forget but it is left u, how to make the difference. I am sure one day you will come back again to the same glory of success in Athletic sports in National and Interatnaional level.
