UAE releases actress Chrisann Pereira nabbed in 'planted' drugs case

Sharjah/Mumbai, Apr 27 (IANS) Mumbai actress Chrisann Pereira, who was jailed in Sharjah (UAE) in a 'drugs plant' case, has been released, her family announced via social media late on Wednesday.

Her family posted a video showing them dancing, crying with disbelief, with a relieved but weeping Chrisann on the other side, all urging her to come back as early as possible.

Chrisann, 27, was trapped last month in the 'drugs plant' case by a couple of Mumbai men, who have been arrested and have confessed to their crime.

The accused duo had hidden the drugs in an award trophy which was detected in Sharjah following which the local police had arrested Chrisann. She had been in jail since April 1.

Her distraught family in Mumbai had told IANS on Tuesday that Chrisann is innocent and they have planned to appeal to the PM and MEA for help to secure her early release.

The Mumbai Police Crime Branch, which is probing the case, has nabbed the prime accused Anthony Paul (35), a baker in Borivali, and his associate Rajesh Bubhate (34) alias Ravi, a banker.

They have confessed to handing three persons the award trophies with drugs concealed in them and two others with drugs-laced cakes before they flew to Dubai, ostensibly as vendetta against the Pereira family.

While two, including Chrisann, unwittingly walked into the trap, three others managed to evade the authorities in Sharjah.

Paul, said to be the brain behind the revenge con, apparently nursed an old grudge against the Pereira family, especially Premila (Chrisann's mother), and even got into fisticuffs with her son Kevin.

The police have found that Paul had used the same modus operandi with some other wannabe actors, assuring them of plum roles in global webseries, though one person declined to carry the trophy, which Chrisann later agreed to take with her.

An upcoming actress, Chrisann has featured in films like "Sadak 2", "Batla House", a webseries "Thinkistan", several stage plays. She lives in Borivali suburbs with her family.

The police and courts in UAE behave very respectfully even with accused or criminals. If they get a slight hint that the person is innocent, they will ensure the person is not punished. They even ensure secrecy, names-photos are not spread in media. Nobody can interfere into the court cases or appear as witness unless called. Not like Daakus in India who take advantage and loot the innocent.

If Paulu had grudge with Chrissan's mother, why did he trap other four ? How three could escape? Something fishy....some big heads are involved poor Paulu was made agree to the policemen. May be fear of threat to his life and family...

Thank god, She got justice. In all our lives we find many people like "Anthony Paul" who are jealous and envious. I have a book suggestion to all daijiworld readers to deal with manipulative people, The book name is " 48 Laws of Power". Read it and you will know who the toxic people are and how to control them. Thank me later.

Curious to know what sentencing the conspirators get; should be the same punishment what this actress would have got if proven guilty in UAE ( it should be multiplied by 5 times since they trapped four more victims earlier)

Why are the airport staff who allowed this contraband to pass through not been arrested? Seems like the accused and airport staff was hand in glove. Why does govt staff always get away? Is this why people want govt jobs? Becoz they can become criminals?

Departure airports usually less bothered about narcotics, they are mostly worried about the safety of airlines and airports. Its the immigration of arrival airports who scan for every little thing.

These things are not checked in the departures thoroughly. The onus is on the arrival airport .The arrival country rules apply. Its clearly mentioned in the 'terms and conditions' which we blindly click as 'agree'. Ganja to some extent in gms is legal in India and may go thru. Look at the amount of gold smugglers caught in Mangalore. Men in their rextum and Wemen in their private parts . Infants too are not spared. Taking Gold is okay in the Gulf countries but not in India if tax is not paid. So do not blindly blame God and Modi for everything .

Officials at Departures concentrate on security and safety, looking for explosives, harmful materials and weapons. In Mumbai they have strong metal detectors which can even detect a wet handkerchief in one's pocket.

Being jailed in gulf is a traumatic experience... That too drugs case related inmates will hardly get to contact for help... Poor woman must have really suffered... I wish the fellows were caught in Sharjah instead of Mumbai... Here they will walk out of the case with more ease... Also for the family of the actress, they must improve their public behavior... Nowadays we never know how people will react to situations...

Really Jaggu? Just getting one person out that too in a dubious drugs case isa big achievement ? Then why is the all powerful Vishwa Guru Modiji not able to do anything regarding the release of eight ex-Indian Navy personnel( all officer ranks- Commanders & Captains) in Qatar, who are now rumoured to get death penalty? Qatar is a friendly state full of Indian expats, it should a be aa cakewalk for Modiji to secure their release, shouldn't it?

Modi has nothing to do in this, its Mumbai police's evidence and indian embassy in qatar that made this possible. Your government is busy in Sudan, a tamil origin guy was hanged by Singapore but government did nothing. Remember Kulbhushan Sudhir Jadhav? Still in Pakistani jail. Same goes with those ex-IAF officers in qatar.

UIAE has 7 emirates and 7 Rulers , all have their own separate laws . SHJ is separate state in UAE and it has separate rules . Each Ruler has the right to decide or pardon the prisoners. Now see who has poor knowledge.
