Auto-track 3 System at Mumbai Airport Fails: Flights Delayed

Mumbai, Jul 4: The auto-track 3 system at the Mumbai airport failed to work for two hours on Sunday July 3 causing minor disruptions in the early morning flights.

The AT3 system that was under trail since May 20 was immediately shifted to AT2.  The flight schedule was disrupted only for about 20-25 minutes thereby not causing any major delays. Later engineers were called in to restore the AT3.

An Air Traffic Control (ATC) official said , “As only international operations take place during this time and the intersection point of both runways was closed for maintenance, fewer flights were impacted. Had this happened during peak hours, it would have been a major chaos,” said the official.

The AT3 system relays information like flight number, speed, altitude, distance between two aircrafts, etc to the linked ATC workstations. It mainly helps to prioritize landings after gauging the speed and altitude of the aircraft.
