Puttur: Daughter sucks venom, saves mother from cobra bite

Daijiworld Media Network – Puttur (MS)

Puttur, Mar 21: In a daredevil and timely act, a girl college student saved the life of her mother who was bitten by a cobra. This incident occurred at Keyyur of the taluk.

Shramya Rai, a degree student of a private college of the city and ranger of scouts and guides, is the brave young girl, who saved the life of her mother. The incident took place five days ago. Citizens have widely appreciated the bravery and presence of mind of Shramya.

Mamata Rai, a gram panchayat member of Keyyur and mother of Shramya, had been to her mother’s house which is nearby. Mamata had gone to the farmland in order to switch on the pump. As she was returning, she accidentally stepped on the cobra, which bit her. An alert Mamata immediately put a knot of dry grass above the bite mark in order to prevent the venom from spreading upwards in the body. However, Shramya, who realized that the dry grass knot will not be that effective, sucked the venom from the wound.

Mamata was later taken to hospital and she survived without any ill effects of the cobra bite because of the timely presence of mind shown by her daughter Shramya.

Shramya said, “My mother informed me about the snake bite. Though we tied dry grass above the bite, I was not confident that the venom would not spread to the other parts of the body. So I sucked the venom through my mouth. Doctors at the hospital said that the sucking of poison was better. This is my first experience. I took the courage as I had heard about this first aid technique and also saw the same in some movie.”

While it was brave on the part of the girl it's not scientific and futile .cobra venom is a neuro toxin....spreads quickly...do not suck by mouth.tie a semirigid torniquete and rush to a standard hospital where antivenom can be administered.

Before sucking the poisonous venom one should gargle the mouth with cooking oil to cover the wound in the mouth and protect the venom reaching the blood steam.

Please do not suck venom bollywood style anyone, strictly no; if you have blisters mouth ulcers cuts you will end up dead. Tie appropriate knot not too tight as to cut off blood supply, maintain patients calm & rush to hospital while inquiring with hospital whether they have antivenom for particular snake species. If you do not recognise snake or not sure click clear pictures of snake

It is a myth spread through ages. Sucking never helps in removing poison from the bite of any venomous snake, rather it might help spread the poison in the process. Venom is most precious tool for snakes to capture and digest their prey. For this reason they most of the time bite without injecting poison. That's the reason quackery works by relieving fear from the victims. Follow first aid and don't let victims walk or fall to sleep and encourage them by talking they would survive. Take the victim immediately to a hospital where anti venom is available.

This is dangerous and should never be done. Sucking venom from a person who has been bitten is a dangerous myth that should not be propagated and by publishing and lauding this debunked and unscientific practice you are disseminating misinformation that could have dangerous consequences.

Such acts of pseudo (filmy style) bravery should never be propogated; or published with the real proven methods of snake bite first aid so that "blind followers" do not repeat such dangerous acts and put both the victim's and first aid givers life in peril!!

The part of the bite should be immobilized and kept below the position of the heart to stop spread of the venom; tourniquet should never be tied as popularly suggested; also caffeinated drinks and alcohol to be strictly avoided! Only about 20% of snakes found in India are venomous!

I hope this act is not taken as an example (please ignore the movie part), it would have been catastrophic if the girl who sucked the venom out had any wounds/ulcers in the mouth. Secondly it could be that the bite itself was dry where the venom was not injected or injected venom level was not high (possibility if the snake had drained it's venom while trying to hunt down it's prey just before the bite). But nevertheless brave effort from the girl and good that no harm was done to anyone.

This "venom sucking" method is very risky and counterproductive; if the girl had any cuts or sores on the tongue or oral mucosa, she would have gotten fatally affected! IMHO, the snake was probably not a cobra as it's venom is highly toxic and very rapid acting!

Please don't spread misinformation. Once the venom has entered the body it's not possible to suck it out. Please don't try this in case you come across such case.

Incredible. Our women are scaling new heights every time. No doubt This is because of the great success of the Beti Bachao - Beti Padhao program after 2014. "Kamaal" ho gaya. Also I think the Cobra might be a chinese breed. Less venomous

Thank heavens, she herself didn't succumb by doing this unscientific act! cut and suck" method was discredited and proved to be counterproductive. If the person who sucks the venom has a cut or torn skin in the mouth, it can instantaneously get absorbed in the blood stream and lead to fatal consequences. Venom spreads through the victim’s system so quickly, there’s no hope of sucking out a sufficient volume to make any difference. Cutting and sucking the wound only serves to increase the risk of infection and can cause further tissue damage. A tourniquet is also very dangerous, as it cuts off the blood flow and leaves the venom concentrated in one area of the body. In worst-case scenarios, it could cost someone a limb. I, personally, opine it was not a cobra as the venom is so deadly that death is almost instantaneous ofcourse depending on the place of the bite!!

Extraordinary act of love, sacrifice and courage.... This is a procedure used by expert unani medics... It is a very risky procedure where one is supposed to spit out the venom and clean the mouth after every extraction.... Any wounds in the mouth can be dangerous too... However all is well that ends well... Kudos to the brave girl....

Brave move by the girl. Her presence of mind must be truly appreciated and should be awarded. It is not that she saved her mother, but the courage she took to save a precious human life. She should be honored with gallantry award. Not all of us can take courage to take the extreme decision with span of second and without wasting time. Well done !!
