Mangaluru, Mar 7: The inflow of water at Tumbe vented dam, which supplies water to the city, has reduced considerably. If it does not rain by the end of April, there will be an acute shortage of water in the city. The current stock of water in the dam is enough to cater to about 50.

The level of water in Thumbay vented dam was 5.85 meters a couple of days ago. If the MCC and the public of the city do not take any precautionary measures, the city will face the acute shortage of water that was experienced in 2019.

Compared to previous years, the level of water has reduced to its lowest level this year. On March 3, 2020, the level of water in the dam was six meters. However, this year it is just 5.85 meters. Compared to 2019, the demand for water has increased by 12%. So, the scarcity of water is expected to hit the city sooner, say the officials.

As an immediate measure, the MCC has stopped water supply to new industries and building construction work. Instructions have been given to ration water to the currently running industries.

In AMR, there is a water level of 18.9 meters (above sea level). Out of this, 14.5 meters can be used for the city. Only when the water in Thumbay vented dam reduces to dangerous levels, AMR dam water will be used.

As the inflow of water has stopped, if it does not rain, by the end of the month of March, water rationing will be done in the city. The public is requested to reduce the usage of water for gardens, building work, and cleaning of vehicles. Even for household use, only a limited quantity needs to be used, as per MCC Mayor Jayanand Anchan.
