Udupi: Kasturba Hospital Blood Center holds international symposium, ‘Transfusion Medicine Update'

Udupi, Mar 4: Kasturba Hospital Blood Center organized an international symposium on the March 2- 3, with a focus mainly on ‘Patient Blood Management and Transplant Immunology’.

The International Society of Blood Transfusion, Amsterdam, the Netherlands, supported the symposium as part of the developing country award that the Kasturba Hospital Blood Center received recently.

Dr Sharath Rao, the pro vice-chancellor of health sciences, Manipal Academy of higher education appreciated the efforts taken by the department of Immunohematology and wished all the success to the event.

Inaugurating the event, Dr Padmaraj Hegde, the dean of Kasturba Medical College, said that, transfusion medicine is moving towards individualized medicine with patient blood management practices. He acknowledged the support given by the ISBT and thanked Jenny White, the executive director of ISBT, professor Erica Wood, from Monash University, Australia, Dr Belen who represented the Cellular therapy working party ISBT.

Dr Avinash Shetty, medical superintendent of Kasturba Hospital felicitated the National faculty, Dr Poonam Malhotra, from AIIMS New Delhi, Dr R R Sharma, from PGI Chandigarh, Dr Ajay Gandhi, from Werfen India, Dr M A Rafi from Jubilee Mission Kerala, Dr Dolly Daniel from CMC Vellore, Dr Ankit Mathur from TTK Blood Center, Dr Rajesh Sawant from Dhirubai Ambani Hospital and Medical Research Center, Mumbai who shared their experience on the core topics of the symposium.

On delivering the programme overview, Dr Shamee Shastry, organizing chairman and professor/and head of Kasturba Hospital Blood centre, said that “In addition to the lectures, the symposium comprised the hands-on workshop on viscoelastic testing, oral, poster presentation and quiz for postgraduate students. The panel discussion session was interactive and included experts from clinical specialities”.

Around 150 delegates from all over the country actively participated in the programme. Dr Ganesh Mohan, associate professor and the organizing secretary of the event proposed the vote of thanks.
