Mumbai, Jun 12 (IANS): Veteran journalist Jyotirmoy Dey, who used to report on the Mumbai mafia and was apparently shot dead by the underworld a day earlier, was cremated here Sunday.

The man was killed by four unidentified motorcycle-borne assailants Saturday near his house in Powai area. He was cremated at the Rajawadi Crematorium in Ghatkopar.

Earlier, his body was kept at his maternal home for over two hours to enable people to pay their last respects.

It was taken in a procession to the crematorium where the last rites were performed. People paid tributes to him and his contribution to the media.

Dey was Mid-Day's Editor (Special Investigations) who specialised in reporting crime and exposing the city's underworld.

He had done many reports on Dawood Ibrahim and Chhota Rajan, the fugitive underworld dons of Mumbai.

He had also authored "Khallas -- an A to Z Guide to the Underworld" and "Zero Dial -- The Dangerous World of Informers".

A meeting of Maharashtra Home Minister R.R. Patil, Mumbai Police Commissioner Arup Patnaik and media representatives has been convened by Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan to discuss safety of journalists.

Although police have yet to make headway in cracking the case, they have recovered vital clues on the killers from the footage of a CCTV installed in the Crisil Building in Powai.

The Maharashtra government vowed to nab the culprits at the earliest.

The murder has been condemned by journalist organisations, NGOs, prominent personalities as well as celebrities.

The Commonwealth Journalists Association (CJA) said it had taken a serious note of the preliminary probe, indicating a possible role of the underworld.

This is the name of 'Democracy'.
First of all there is no fear among human beings. Even the wild animals from forests such as Tusker/Leopard are walking fearlessly on the street of citycentre killing the pedestrians
    and damaging the public property.

May his soul rest in peace, May the Almighty give strength to his family members to bear this loss.

Very very sad news if all the honest, dedicated hard working people get killed by criminals then what is left in the society, there is no hope left. Govt. should take stringent action against criminals.
