Mangaluru: Two solid waste management units start functioning in DK on pilot basis

Mangaluru, Feb 6: Sixteen solid waste management units are being set up on a pilot basis out of which units in Goltamajalu of Bantwal taluk and Ujire in Beltangady taluk are included in Dakshina Kannada (DK). The units are capable of handling 3,000 litres of solid waste. Already, panchayats of Bantwal and Beltangady have bought sucking vehicles which are driven by trained staff.

Works on the units have been completed and tests are about to begin.

The rural parts of Dakshina Kannada district have been declared open-defecation free and the solid waste management unit at Chiminiguri of Goltamajalu village has been opened.

The units are capable of managing solid wastes of 70 villages in 49 GPs - 25 in Goltamajalu and 24 in Ujire.

A grants-in aid of Rs 82.2 lac for Goltamajalu unit and Rs 58.39 lac for Ujire unit have been utilised. Technical and administrative committees have been constituted to manage the units.

    Nice to see waste being processed.... It is the responsibility of each of us to manage waste from the bud.... Non segregated waste is a big headache for the municipal workers... Anything that builds up becomes a mountain... I feel cleanliness, keeping public spaces clean and waste segregation must be part of the curriculum right from 3rd standard onwards....
