Mumbai Civic Employees to Lose Jobs if They Strike

Mumbai, June 7 (IANS) Employees of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) who participate in union strikes or agitations stand to lose their jobs and their official quarters, a top civic official has warned.

In a stern circular issued to all 80,000-plus employees and the unions, Municipal Commissioner Subodh Kumar has also said that any losses arising out of the strikes or agitations would be compensated from the salaries of the striking staffers.

A strike, scheduled to start from Tuesday, was postponed to next week in view of the June 9 rally and procession by the opposition Shiv Sena-Bharatiya Janata Party-Republican Party of India against the ruling Congress-Nationalist Congress Party Maharashtra government.

Kumar has declared that the unions which call for any illegal strike or agitation could face derecognition through the legal process.

The BMC circular adds that the employees participating in strike or agitation would lose their salaries for the days concerned.

However, top BMC union leaders like Sharad Rao, Satyawan Javkar and Baba Kadam have reiterated their intention to go ahead with their three-day strike from midnight June 13.

The BMC apprehends that if the strike materialises, many civic services, including cleaning, picking up garbage, hospitals, maternity hospitals, public transport, fire brigade and others could be seriously affected.
