Karkala, Jan 28: A whirlwind was experienced at Gandhi Maidan here on Saturday January 28, which caught people by surprise and fear.

Youths were playing cricket at the ground in the afternoon when the whirlwind was experienced which spiralled into the sky throwing dust and sweeping people off their feet.

The wind also took with it wastes strewn across and the dried up plants including leaves into the air. People stood and witnessed the whirlwind for a few minutes with awe.

Karkala which lies near the foothills of the Western Ghats was witness to similar whirlwinds in the past as well. Karkala, Moodbidri, Achekaru, Belavu and Malpe environs have experienced such whirlwinds in recent years.

How can anyone with eyes call this a whirlwind? This is a tornado, mild but definitely a tornado. Looks like Parashurama Srishti is in for more surprises from Mother Nature. Tornadoes require specially built homes, with deep foundations. DK is not equipped for them.

Whirlwind occur in hot/dry weather condition typically seen in South India. Typically Whirlwind wind rise from ground up, whereas tornadoes reach down from cloud to ground. Uncommon in India but were seen in Punjab ling Time back i guess.
