Shabana Azmi Seeks Relook at SRA Projects in Mumbai

Mumbai, May 24 (PTI) Actress Shabana Azmi met Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan seeking relook at the rehabilitation projects under the aegis of Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) in the city.

Azmi, who led a delegation of an NGO, Nivara Hakk, which is working for providing low cost housing to the poor, told PTI that she urged Chavan to re-look at the policy of constructing a 24-storeyed building to rehabilitate slum dwellers.

Similarly, slum rehabilitation should involve open spaces, provision of social amenities like markets, schools, health facilities, small business establishments, she said.

"Instead of rehabilitating small number of slums, there should be bigger projects otherwise the rehabilitated areas will become slums in few years," Shabana said.

The actress said Chavan agreed that to provide better quality of life to the urban poor, township rules should apply for SRA projects.
