Condoms, contraceptives found in school bags in Bengaluru

Bengaluru, Nov 30 (IANS): A routine exercise of checking school bags in Bengaluru schools revealed shocking facts of the students being in possession of condoms, contraceptives, cigarettes and whiteners.

Incidents such as consuming alcohol, having shots of vodka in schools have become quite common these days. But, what is disturbing is that substances are found, says D. Shashikumar, general secretary of the Associated Managements of Schools in Karnataka (KAMS).

Shashikumar told IANS on Wednesday that this is just the tip of the iceberg.

The schools have decided to send these children on a 10-day holiday. The managements have also decided to keep the information confidential and arrange counselling for the students and their parents. The checking was conducted mainly in the schools located on the outskirts of Bengaluru.

The condoms and contraceptives were found in the bags of Class 10 students, both boys and girls. Upon questioning, the students without any hesitation told the teaching staff that they needed to have some fun amid their tight schedule, sources said. The behaviour is also attributed to the isolation period of two years during the Covid pandemic as the children spent most of their time with electronic gadgets.

The parents and school managements conceal these facts fearing getting a bad reputation. There are small children who are drug peddlers. If the matter reaches a high-level committee, we will speak about it, Shashikumar said.

It was a routine exercise taken up by the school managements as per the advice of KAMS. In a meeting these facts were discussed in the interest of students. "I made a submission to the Child Welfare Committee in this regard four days ago but there has been no response," he said.

He maintained that in order to protect the rights of one set of children, the rights of other children have been violated. These children are exploiting other children. Disturbing things like substance and tobacco abuse, peer pressure, fights, comparisons are happening among the children. Unfortunately no one is able to question the children.

The parents are helpless and the teachers are reluctant as the slightest questioning of children amounts to an offence these days, Shashikumar said.

Sources in the education ministry said that they have not received any complaints in this regard so far.

Cigarette, alcohol, sex all are easier methods of stress relieving. Good or bad who cares. Another issue is that the children are lacking the love from parents. They search for the love from other ways. Don't treat your children as marks bringing machine

I assume mostly such things happen in high end private schools mostly children of filthy rich parents who are busy in their own world thinking that giving all luxuries to the children will not make them go wayward otherwise from where they are getting money to buy tags, condoms, high end alcohol, drugs etc? When under the influence of drugs, in a high there could be good chance of becoming pregnant or catching STDs if proper protection is not used. All this while, this was happening in call centers and IT sector, but 10th standard students resorting to all this is really shocking and definitely these activities might be happening in their respective homes when nobody is around. This also opens the door for opportunists for blackmailing, extortion etc. What faithfulness/morality can one expect from children, who have had multiple sex partners in their teens, after they get married? No doubt condoms are selling like hot cakes even in Manga-na-Uru the way they are being prominently displayed in the shops! No doubt we are following western culture where marriages have become rare! If this is the case with young children what can one say of married couples who are employed with plush jobs and coming across various types of people in their workplaces. Also rampant use of birth control pills has a deleterious effect on the human body by disrupting the hormonal cycle!!

It starts with both parents and children watching together the Advertisements in TV that show a body of a woman as no more than a commodity; then Ektha kapoor serials that has no value for relationships; then the easy access to obscene sites. At this stage, the excitement is ready to explode; which only requires a triggering opportunity or incident that is easily accessible in the name of freedom. The taboo to marry at young age make the things worst. Then we blame our children?

@Rudolf, You asked me: "Getting married at young age who will take care of their expenses, children and other marital responsibilities??".............. Of course, the husband has to take care of the expenses of his wife. There is no responsibility on the girl's side for marriage reception or after marriage expenses. Husband has to bear everything. Now you may argue that what if the Husband is also young? . 1)The husband may be rich to handle all the expenses or the 2) couples have to spend according to their income levels if the husband is not rich. It is a holy relationship; so each of them have to be sacrificial when it comes to fulfilling their secondary desires. And if you delay the marriage, there is more to loose than gain; be it spiritual peace or fulfilling natural desires. Do you know that delayed marriages are one of root causes of breast cancer?

@Eva, In developed countries, the family structure of the so called modern parents is completely collapsed. People prefer live in relationship against the marriage; children leave their parents in old age homes when the parents need the mercy of their children the most. And again having known that the children are going to put the parents in old age homes in the future, parents stop spending on their children when they are adult. And in some countries the LGBTQ population is as high as 6%. Now, tell me is it called a family at the first place?.

@Santosh, I too agree sex in stress relieving activity. But it is more important TO HAVE SELF CONTROL and not to become slaves to our own desires; and also to use proper ways to release one's stress. That is why it is always recommended to marry as early as possible after one reaches puberty. But our government increased the age of marriage form 18 to 21.

@ Santhosh, Udupi, Beg to differ with you. Sex is not the one and only choice to reduce stress. There are many other activities. We would rid our stress on the playground. We were the most happiest sweating in the ground playing non stop for 6-7 hours a day. We were happy doing gardening. Back then If we had the choice of tv or play/sports we chose sports. These days kids are on their phones entire day and night with games, social media and senseless chats, short reels and videos. Technology is good, but too much is too bad.

I am not surprised. Some schools have sex education for 9 and 10 Standard students. What is being done by students is just the home work. Johnson & Johnson female representatives come to good schools to teach the girls about menstruation and use of their products. While I was in Mumbai, our neighbour, a handsome 10th Std boy told us that some girls in his class were taking him out for the act and girls were bringing condoms themselves. A pharmacist in Bangalore told me, some mothers mix secretly contraceptives in their grown up daughters' food to prevent pregnancy. These are not stories, but the reality of present day.

Santhan M:Kinnigoli/Mumbai ,here I will tell the facts how here functions and with our family happened and without hiding. We are having two kids ,a boy and girl.As both were in gymnasium in class 6 or 7th ,they had Biology. In this class teachers were explaining about changes of human body and how a child exists. with showing naturally on board pictures .But I found by my daughter some teenager magazins called ..explaining better .She was hiding borrowed fro her classmates.(was a shock for us)so it is with teenagers .They get magazins free hand sold. Some teenagers go to doctors and ask for contraseptives without knowledge of parents.(Thank God not by us):Teachers have to give classes on Biology since Children are becoming early mature in this age.Previously it was very late. But many teenagers wait till their studies finished for a Partner .some are in hurry .Suppose they find his or her not matching their interest then goodbye.and choose next one. Many borrow cassette to see a sex film.So children are advanced in our times than their Parents.

If something illegal (like narcotics/alcohol etc), it is reasonable for school administration to be interested in the school bag contents. But other things are personal. Teenagers just express what they are meant to express by nature. At the most, it is upto the parents to oversee.
