Mangaluru: FPO extended to fisheries sector, seven joints formed in DK, Udupi

Mangaluru, Nov 26: The government has approved establishment of 750 Farmers’ Produce Organizations (FPO) in the state. Accordingly, the fisheries department had decided to form a Fisheries farming produce organization. Already three FPOs in Udupi and four in Dakshina Kannada (DK) districts have begun functioning.

Out of the 750 FPOs, department wise and annual targets are set. For the Fisheries department 93 FPO targets are given annually. Already 15 FPOs are registered from various districts.

Fishermen do not get a good rate for their produce many times. That is why the formation of FPO will strengthen them. The Fishermen can face the market ups and downs unitedly. Also suitable markets can be arranged.

The influence of FPOs can be increased by having good bonds with the development department of government, universities, non-govt organizations and PPP. At present fisheries cooperative societies are working like banks. FPOs will give suggestions and cooperation to the fishermen. FPOs can avoid middlemen by buying the produce directly from its members and also provide them with required good quality equipment.

Minister Angara said, “Minimum 100 members are required for formation of FPO of fishermen. The organization will get profit from production and sales of fish. The annual target for the fisheries department is 93 FPOs. In DK and Udupi already seven FPOs of fishermen are formed.”
