Mumbai: Put All Nuke Plans on Hold, Urges Anti-Jaitapur Group

Mumbai, May 12 (IANS) The Konkan Bachao Samiti (KBS), spearheading the anti-Jaitapur Nuclear Power Project (JNPP) agitation in Maharashtra, Wednesday welcomed Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan's statement that his country would abandon plans to build more nuclear reactors in the wake of the Fukushima disaster in March.

In a statement here, KBS said even India should follow suit and put all her plans for new nuclear projects in the country, including the 9,900-MW JNPP, on hold till a rigorous scientific scrutiny over its risks was carried out along with public hearings.

The KBS statement, signed by top activists like Vivek Monteiro, Adwait Pednekar, Sanjay Singhvi, Arun Velaskar and Madhu Mohite, was released as Union Minister for Environment and Forests Jairam Ramesh faced strong protests from students of the Tata Institute of Social Sciences here earlier Wednesday.
