Ramdev Plans Fast-Unto-Death, Seeking Death Penalty for Graft

Mumbai, May 4 (IANS): Yoga guru Baba Ramdev Wednesday announced he will go on a fast-unto-death from June 4 in New Delhi to demand capital punishment for corrupt officials and recovery of black money stashed away in Swiss banks by Indian politicians and businessmen.

Speaking to reporters here, Ramdev said that names of all foreign bank account holders should be made public and high denomination currency notes like of Rs.500 and Rs.1,000 be banned.

"Despite knowledge about it, the central government has not taken any concrete decision on the issue of black money plaguing the country," Ramdev said.

He is likely to be joined by social activist Anna Hazare, former police officer Kiran Bedi and Karnataka 'Lokayukta' (ombudsman) Santosh Hegde.

Ramdev said his supporters in India and from abroad will join him in the hunger fast at New Delhi's Ramlila Ground.

Vowing to continue the fight against corruption, Ramdev said a strong Lokpal Bill should be enacted by August this year, as assured by the central government after a hunger strike by Hazare in New Delhi last month.

Ramdev said he plans to write to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, highlighting issues related to corruption in the country.

Ramdev reiterated this is not a platform for him to join politics. "I have no ambitions to be a politician and will never take part in active politics."

Ramdev is at present touring Mumbai and surrounding areas as part of his 300-day nationwide tour to teach yoga to the masses.

    Many anna Hazare & Baba Ram Dev's are needed to fight and remove deep rooted corruption in our country. Corrput Politicians and beaurocrats will jointly lauched compaign against all such persons who dare to take up the task of speaking against corruption. Public did a wounderful action in support of anna Hazare. If the public continue to support the strugle against corruption, the situation of our country will under go a great change. I wish them all success in their venture.

    So now Baba Ramdev has decided to embark on a publicity stunt with the help of hysteric middle class and NGOs. Bringing the black money stashed in foreign banks involves complex procedure . A circus at jantar mantar will not be of any use, as the procedure cannot be hastened at the will of Indian Government. Demand for capital punishment for graft-takers is based on lack of knowledge of jurisprudence. Its deterrent effect is limited. In the 18th century England, pick-pocketing was a felony, but instances have been cited when pick-pocketing took place at the time of public hangings of the pick-pocketers. Had death penalty been so effective in rooting out corruption, there would have been no corruption in China. Not plethora of laws aimed at punishing corrupt individuls but systemic reforms (e.g. food stamps instead of P.D.S., direct cash transfer instead of low-priced kerosene) are required to root out corruption. Ramdevbaba and his coterie are simple ignorant of this fact or they are simply interested in gaining cheap publicity and not at all interested in rooting out corruption. Also, the definition of corruption in Baba's lexicon seems very narrow. His trusts sell spurious medicines claiming that they can cure cancer etc. If the Baba introspects a little, his introspection may reveal that he need not preach others against corruption but correct himself instead.

    Congress govt will not take any action on black money & rampant corruption which is creation of this party in India.The black money can be recovered within 6 months if govt impose death sentence for culprits who will not surrender within 90 days of grace period.Similarly death penalty must be imposed for graft.The above are only remedy to unearth black money & stop corruption at all levels.All illegal money of political leaders as well as others should be confiscated after charge sheet.
