Mumbai: Renowned Tulu Actor B K Vamanraj Salian Passes Away

Mumbai, May 2: Seventy-two-year-old B K Vamanraj Salian, renowned Tulu theatre artiste and movie actor, who was known as ‘Bangar Patler’, passed away in a hospital in Andheri on Monday May 2 following a brief illness.

Vamanraj was a native of Bikarnakatte, Mangalore. He lived in the metro and served as chief artiste with Kalajagattu drama troupe and acted in several Tulu and Kannada plays.

Vamanraj acted as ‘Chennaya’ in the black and white Tulu movie ‘Koti – Chennaya’ besides movies like ‘Maribale’, ‘Mother’ – produced by Vishu Kumar, ‘Kuduremuk’, ‘Akhanda Brahmachari’ (Kannada), as well as Hindi and Marathi movies besides acting in thousands of multi-lingual dramas. He left his legacy in ‘Guddeda Bhoota’ Tulu short movie and bagged several national and international awards for his acting skills.

Vamanraj is survived by his wife, two daughters, and hundreds of fellow artistes and theatre enthusiasts.

The mortal remains of Vamanraj were placed for public viewing at his residence in Juhu–Versova here and cremated at Andheri (West) on Monday evening, informed his long time associate Bhaskar Sarapady.

Kalajagattu theatre troupe promoter Vijay Kumar Shetty, Surendra Kumar Hegde, hundreds of Tulu and Kannada theater artistes, and thousands of theater enthusiasts offered condolences to the bereaved family of Vamanraj.

    Very sad news. Vaman was a very good actor. At the same time he was simple, humble and friendly. It was my fortune, I too got an opportunity to act with him in one Telu Drama in Bombay. May his soul rest in peace and his family may get the strength to bear this irreparable loss.

    When we have started Kalajagathu Mumbai in 1979, I was very fortunate to be associated with such a great artist Vamanraj. It was a great learning experience participating in acting in drama's alongwith him. It was a shocking news hearing his sudden death. May his soul rest in peace and let the almighty give strength to his family to bear this irreperable loss.

    Koti chennayya was talk of the town during those days. Even Bangar Patler too during 1994. Vaman Raj Salian was a talented actor. May his soul rest in peace.

    Vamanraj was a great actor. His character Chennaya in 'Koti Chennaya' movie was memorable.

    His death is a big loss to Tulu Theatre. May his soul rest in peace.

    May his soul rest in peace. I have seen him during Koti Channaya shooting in Katapady. We used to run behind the troops during shooting. We were lucky to watch all the activities of Koti channaya movie, since producer Late Sri. Muddu Suvarna is from Katapady, few compound away from my house.
