Mumbai: Kannada department of Mumbai University releases Anupama magazine special edition

Mumbai, Jan 13: “Newspapers are a forum for authors. Anupama monthly family magazine that has been published without interruption during the last two decades has brought to light several authors. Besides correcting the minds of the people, it alerts the community. Karki Soori Venkatramana Shastri nurtured journalism in Mumbai through the first Kannada newspaper in Mumbai, Havyaka Subhodha. Winning the hearts and minds of people is a big task for journalism. Journalism is eclipsed by politicians these days. Newspapers such as Anupama doing the work of Kannada stepping on such obstacles is worth congratulating,” said Mumbai University Kannada department head Dr G N Upadhya. He addressed a gathering after releasing a special issue of Kannada monthly magazine Anupama on its completion of 20 years of circulation.

Author Srinivasa Jokatte who has been reading the magazine and writing for it since the beginning said that the monthly magazine first issue was released by author B T Lalita in Mangaluru. Progressive author Shahanaz M has taken a major part in its growth as its chief editor for the last 20 years. Her editorials every month have increased the prestige of the magazine. The release of the special issue in Mumbai is a proud occasion for Kannadigas he said.



Dr G N Upadhya offered tributes to the chief editor of Kannada monthly magazine Akshaya, M B Kukyan who passed away recently. A silent prayer was held for the soul of M B Kukyan at the beginning of the programme. “The donation of Rs five lac by M B Kukyan to the Kannada department of the university and presenting a gold medal to students who secured the first rank in MA is a matter of pride,” he said.

Kannada department’s Shantala Hegde was on the dais. A drawing by a well-known artist in the country, Jaya Salian of M B Kukyan was handed over to the Kannada department. Mumbai University Kannada co-professor, Dr Poornima Sudhaker Shetty compered the programme. Karki Venkatramana Shastri Soori award committee’s Shashikala Hegde rendered the vote of thanks.
