Kundapur, Jan 12: Of late, agriculture has been witnessing multifarious experiments. Brahmeri Manjunath Naik from Haklady village in the taluk has succeeded in raising both Gulla and eggplant varieties of brinjal.

Mulching method came to the fore in watermelon cultivation in the taluk. Now this method has also proved effective for other types of farming. Noojady Brahmeri Mannath Naik, who tried this method in growing vegetables, has tasted success. Naik, who laid emphasis on mulching, has been earning well by growing brinjal, ridge gourd etc.

Manjunath, because of his enthusiasm to implement new methods and technology in agriculture, has bagged Sablady Sheenappa Shetty agricultural award.

Mulching system blocks evaporation of moisture and stops soil erosion. The fertility of topsoil prevails and sand erosion does not happen. There is no scope for weeds to grow. Problem of insects and other forms of life becomes less. Nutrients directly reach the plans. Drip irrigation saves 60 percent water. If the covering is carefully preserved, it can be used again.
