Shivamogga, Jan 12: In a curious case, the children of the murdered man have found out the man who had escaped after killing their father nine years back. During the period coronavirus infection forced many to restrict their activities, these children showed grit and courage to not only pursue and prove the case but also find the guilty.

In fact, the man they have now found to have killed their father, was acquitted earlier by the district court.

Jose C Kappan from Kerody village in Padavagodu gram panchayat in Sagar taluk was murdered nine years ago. Siju Kurien had gone missing after the murder. Siju has since been arrested by the police from Palakkad, Kerala.

Siju Kurien

As his children and family members were living abroad, Jose C Kappan was living alone and looking after his plantation in Kerody village. Siju Kurien who was working for Jose, had murdered his master in 2012 and buried the mortal remains under the manure pit at the backside of the cattle shed.

Within days since the news of Jose going missing spread, Siju had enquired a few about selling the property. The locals had grown suspicious about him and informed the police. A team led by the then deputy superintendent of police, Sharanappa, conducted a probe and found that Jose was murderer. However, the prosecution failed to provide enough evidence to prove the case. The accused was released in 2013. Public prosecutor V G Yalageri, had recommended an appeal in the high court. The high court found him guilty and awarded life term imprisonment and fine of Rs 50,000.

In this case, children of Jose, Sajith and Ranaji, personally went to Kerala and found out the whereabouts of Siju after the police decided that finding him was very difficult. Thereafter, the Sagar police went to Kerala along with the children of Jose on Friday, arrested the murderer and brought him to Sagar. After subjecting him to tests including coronavirus, he was produced before the judge.

Children did what the police could not. All cases of murder, attempted murder and assault should be taken seriously, by the authorities. All such cases should be monitored by higher officials and not left at the hands of the jurisdictional police station.
