Mangaluru: Rename Central railway station after Sri Narayana Guru, urge MCC opposition leaders

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru

Mangaluru, Nov 22: Opposition leaders of Mangaluru City Corporation have appealed to the mayor to rename the Central railway station here after reformer and philosopher Sri Narayana Guru. A delegation led by opposition leader Abdul Rauf submitted a memorandum in this regard to mayor Diwakar.

In the memorandum, the opposition leaders stated that Sri Narayana Guru had set foot in Tulunadu after arriving here by train in 1908. "The Central railway station should thus be named in memory of Sri Narayana Guru who reformed the society," they stated, proposing that the new name should be 'Sri Narayana Gurudeva Railway Station'.

"At a time when Sri Narayana Guru was uplifting the underprivileged and backward classes in Kerala, a few Billawa leaders from Mangaluru went to Kerala and succeeded in bringing him to this city. He arrived by train at Central railway station in 1908 and touched the lives of people here. The year 1908 should therefore be written in golden letters in the annals of Mangaluru's history," the delegation said.

In the memorandum, the opposition leaders also recalled that when the Billawa leaders urged Sri Narayana Guru to build a temple for them, he chose a spot at Kudroli where divine flowers grew. He laid foundation for Shree Gokarnanatheshwara Temple at this site, which went on to become world famous. He also encouraged his disciples and followers to seek knowledge and get trained in occupational and agricultural skills. Hence the Central railway station should be named after Sri Naryana Guru in order to preserve and promote his principles and values, the delegation said.

Corporator Shashidhar Hegde, Lancelot Pinto, A C Vinayraj, Lathif Kandak, Naveen D'Souza and others were part of the delegation.

The priority is to deploy Kannada/Tulu knowing staff at the Mangalore
station. The station and the stalls have been overrun by Malayalees.
Instead of going for cosmetic changes like renaming Congress would
do well to take up real causes for the benefit of travellers .

We can think of renaming later, first get rid of all those Keralites dominating the rail dept in our town.. The moment you step into the railway station, we get the Kerala feeling. Just wondering if we are really in Karnataka or Kerala.

Only you have the patent rights reserved for similar action and if others do its illegal. So, by your own words you too are good for only name change and a pioneer in it.

What purpose does this craze to rename places, historic names, or rewrite history. It is absurd. We may blame the British rulers for colonialism or say racism. It is understandable. But it was the British rulers who took steps to modernize administrative structures, court systems and introduce educational institutes along modern scientific lines and of course medical hospitals. So we should honour them and praise them!
BTW, could you tell us who built the railway in 1908?

Mangalore railways was not built separately. Construction of railways was started by the British in the early 1950s. The first train was operated between Mumbai and Thane in 1853. Over the years the network reached Mangalore in 1907. While Konkan Railways between Mumbai and Mangalore was constructed separately. BTW I am not opposed to renaming, be it Congress or BJP. In Mumbai Shiv Sena too had changed names of railway stations, airport and even many localities in the city and none dared to oppose them.
