Udupi, Nov 18: The approval to upgrade the current district hospital in Udupi to 250-bed hospital with other basic necessities at a cost of Rs 115 crore has been obtained. A meeting on this matter was chaired by the district panchayat president, Dinakar Babu at the district panchayat auditorium on Wednesday, November 18. Discussions also took place over shifting of the current district hospital to Brahmavar until the construction of the new hospital building gets completed.

“The construction of the new hospital building will begin in February or March 2021. Therefore, it is necessary to shift the necessary apparatus and the patients during this time to Brahmavar,” opined MLA Raghupathi Bhat. It was decided in the meeting to inspect the place and arrive at a final decision.

The new hospital will be upgraded to a 250-bed hospital. The staff quarters and other facilities will be made available at a cost of Rs 115 crore.

The taluk hospital was named as district hospital after the formation of Udupi district on August 25, 1997. The staff that are working for the earlier 124-bed hospital had continued to provide their service.

The current hospital building has old Mangaluru-tile roof which has become unsteady. Repairs to the roof only provided temporary relief. As the hospital has become a prime healthcare centre, patients from nearby places like Shivamogga, Uttara Kannada and Chikkamagalur including Udupi visit the hospital.

We need many things for Udupi but we are sleeping. We need a Govermment hospital for Udupi. We have long pending demand for separate Railway devision for Mangalurue. Since 10 years Mangalurue to Kundapura road not completed. Over bridge at Shastri Circle , Kundapura is under construction since 8 - 9 years. When it will be completed the life of the over bridge will be reduced by 10 years ,we won't bother about this.
