Udupi: Santhekatte-Kallianpur four-lane road widening work at brisk pace

Udupi, Nov 4: Road widening work of four-lane road between Kallianpur and Santhekatte is going on at brisk pace. The borders have been already marked and land acquisition work is complete. The trees that are posing an obstacle in the path are being cut. Drainage work on both sides of the road is also being done.

This project, which is costing the state exchequer, Rs 3 crore will help immensely in the development of Santhekatte and Kallianpur. From Santhekatte junction to Kallianpur there are many educational institutions, hospitals and churches. On the other end, Kemmannu, Hoode and Thottam Kodibengre are also connected with this road. In addition, this place is most sought after by tourists. The development of this road was inevitable due to increasing traffic as well as population.

Jagadish Bhat, PWD engineer said that at present the road is 5.5 meters wide. For building a four-lane, this will be widened to seven meters for a distance of 1.1 km. In addition, in the coming days, Kemmannu-Hoode-Bengre road will also be widened. Drainage work is being done on both sides of the road.

PWD had released a grant of Rs 3 crore for the Santhekatte-Kallianpur road as the locals were urging the same. Two trees that were dangerous were cut with the permission of the forest department. In addition, there were six petty shops, which did not have a municipality licence and were doing business by the side of the road. They were vacated in order to widen the road.

The fish market that was at this area has been already vacated and is shifted to a temporary shed adjacent to it on government land. MLA has instructed the city municipality to issue licences to the six petty shops that were vacated due to road widening work. The PWD department is notified to mark a separate zone for them to do business.

MLA Raghupati Bhat said that commuters who were facing traffic snarls at Santhekatte junction due to increasing traffic can heave a sigh of relief now. He also informed that an attractive circle will be constructed on the junction. For this an additional Rs 2 crore is required. This is already discussed with the respective department according to the information given by Bhat.

    Its 2 different cases, I think you are not aware where Kallianpur road ends dead end is River. Kemmannu is totally different, this road may be 1% benefit for kemmannu people. You are as usual clue less.

    Biggest beneficiary is Builders Loby. Kallianpur is very near to Udupi. and Manipal. Now there is no vacant land in city side. Kallianpur has good schools, colleges. Temples, Churches.

    This is a totally waste of money. I am born and bought up there. These trees were century old. Only by doing this they have made illegal fish market legal to appease a community. 5 shops which were illegally built made legal what does it mean? there is no enough place. This will rise the un hygienic dumping in the area. Santhkatte Kallianpur is now New udupi with high standard buildings and population increasing.

    If the department is concerned to widen the road then it should be from Rickshaw stand why in between those shops and buildings which are illegal are spared. Even during the time of highway widening these illegal constructions were spared why? This road is useless as there is no traffic at all as it will end up to river. It will not help Santhekatte junction traffic woes at all. Waste of money why circle in the highway make a flyover. Santhekatte junction is worst from Mangalore to Kundapur.

    In fact it is sad to see some peoples reactions. Govt. is doing good job for the benefit of people, some people say 'no need'. if there is a accident due to narrow road, then people will say govt. not bothered to widen the road. very difficult to satisfy people.

    Sir, Please don't comment unless you know the real picture. What the locals have commented is absolutely right. I have been living in this area since 1994. In fact, it looks like a money-making project only. All the locals are waiting to see how it gets widened as a four-lane from Kallianpur post office to the river side. Also see the lane now built near Goretti and Veerabhadra temple. From which angle, it looks like a four-lane? Looks as if, the so-called leaders of both the parties have joined hands now to make money.

    When schools college open that time little charm in Kallianpur other wise it looks like Ghost village good for retirement the street was in good condition only needed was decent side walk.

    This is called VIKAS of politicians and contractors and left over to be shared with GOVT taluk, district, panchayat, city corporation, state level servants !! The days are move on the budget cost will increase and will become burden to the TAXPAYERS funds ! Anybody auditing this kind of delayed thousands projects all over India !

    Main reason is to give access and visibility to the apartments and commercial complex that is built at that junction. One of the promoters/ builders is a panchayat member.

    100 year old banyan trees were sacrificed to widen this road which leads to a dead end . The Kallianpur road ends at a river , there was absolutely no need to sacrifice these magnificent trees . I Guess no one cares !!!! Corporators and Panchayat members have to make money - that’s the bottom line .

    I agree baniyan tree were cut for widening road. But this was needed. Otherwise these roads are very narrow. Thanks Raghupati Bhat and all people behind this work. From Milagres church to koteroad both sides houses are there since years. Will PWD demolishing these houses to widen the road. Bhat Sir said need 2 crore for circle. We don't need so
    expensive circle. Instead make underpass at santekatte Junction. So that people and school children can cross the road .
