Mangaluru, Oct 28: Coastal Karnataka has been identified for housing an international level aquarium. Fisheries and Dakshina Kannada district in-charge minister Kota Srinivas Poojary has asked the fisheries college to identify a suitable location to build the proposed aquarium.

He gave this information at the progress review meeting held at the fisheries college at Yekkur here on Tuesday, October 27.

Dean of the fisheries college Prof Senthil Vel, who raised this issue, mentioned that Karnataka has 120 isles and 25 among them are located within a stretch of 200 km. "There are bright opportunities to develop them into great tourist destinations. The international level aquarium can be established at Karwar," he suggested.

Reacting to this suggestion, the minister asked the concerned to find a suitable spot to house to aquarium within the limits of the three coastal districts where there are no objections from either the general public or others. He said that as per current plans, the aquarium will be built on a public-private partnership basis.

Fishermen leaders Shashikumar, Nithin Kumar and Mohan Bengre expressed the opinion that when taking up projects in the isles, they should be in such a way that the fishing activity draws support from it.

Deputy director of the fisheries college Parshwanath and teaching staff of the fisheries college were present.
