Udupi: Six fishermen stranded near St Mary's Island rescued by Coast Guard

Udupi, Sep 20: Six fishermen who were stranded in rough weather near St Mary's Island off Malpe coast were rescued by the Coast Guard police here on Sunday September 20.

The fishermen were aboard the 'Jala Sampath' when the boat hit a boulder and the engine malfunctioned.

The incident occured in the morning. The Coast Guard police along with Malpe officers and staff carried out rescue operation and brought the fishermen ashore safely by evening.

Owner of the boat, other fishermen and locals also helped in the rescue operation.

Udupi on Sunday witnessed one of the worst storms in recent years, with large parts of district getting inundated. Several houses were submerged under water and roads were cut off.

Torrential rains since morning wreaked havoc in the districts, causing flash floods in many towns and villages, disrupting vehicular traffic as roads and bridges were submerged and damaging power lines
