Mangaluru, Sep 17: The district National Student Union of India (NSUI), the student wing of the Congress, on Thursday September 17 observed 'National Unemployment Day' by selling pakodas in front of the Congress office in Mallikatte here.
September 17 is also the birthday of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. As BJP geared up to celebrate the PM's birthday with 'Seva Saptah' week with a series of programmes like blood donation camps, the opposition parties led by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi termed the day 'Unemployment Day' to emphasize the increasing rate of unemployment in the country especially in the wake of coronavirus pandemic.
Addressing the gathering, NSUI district general-secretary Sawad Sullia said, "We are celebrating Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s birthday as 'National Unemployment Day' in an innovative way by selling pakodas. Modi had earlier promised to generate 12 crore jobs. Today, we are in a situation where we have lost 2.5 crore jobs.
"Due to the unscientific manner of imposing the lockdown, every section of society has been affected. We have faced job losses. Doctors, engineers, graduates are without jobs and are selling pakodas. The central government has not taken measure to announce schemes for students.
"Dakshina Kannada is known as an educational hub, but now students from here are moving abroad in search of jobs. The Dakshina Kannada MPs have failed to bring in IT companies to our district to generate employment," he said.
NSUI state general secretary Farooq Bayabe, Anvith Kateel, Shounak Rai, Vinay Kumar and others were present.

“BJP activists are celebrating the birthday of Prime Minister Narendra Modi all over the country. We hope that the PM directs his efforts to brighten the future of youth after this,” said NSUI leader Saurabh Ballal.
“The country is facing a difficult situation and the government failed to create schemes to provide jobs to the youth. Young people have become unemployed due to the lockdown. The country is facing internal and external issues that have never been heard before. The union government is reducing the facilities that should be provided by them and are making life for the people miserable. Government organizations are being sold to private organizations one by one knocking down the livelihood of the youth. There are clouds of war hovering over India and China. A small country like Nepal which was on friendly terms with India is also looking for scuffles,” he said.
“The state government has failed to recognise the Covid treatment-related irregularities and crack down the drugs network. They have also failed to form schemes that promote self-sufficiency among youth. The environment has become conducive for corruption and drug addiction.”
“The government should show determination to defeat the drug trade. It has the responsibility of rescuing youth and society from the drug mafia. NSUI is observing Prime Minister’s birthday on September 17 as Unemployment Day. Youth should participate in twitter campaigns in this connection and create awareness so that the union government solves the issue of unemployment,” he said.
