Mangaluru/Udupi, Aug 30: Dakshina Kannada on Sunday August 30 recorded a sharp spike in coronavirus tally with 334 new cases and six deaths, while Udupi too recorded an increase of 254 cases.

As per the Dakshina Kannada district health bulletin, a total of 12,443 positive cases have been reported till date, out of which 2,665 are currently active. A total of 95,213 samples have been tested so far, out of which 82,770 are negative.

As many as 9,422 patients have recovered and been discharged from hospital, including 213 on Sunday. A total of 356 deaths have occured so far, including six on Sunday.

Among the 334 new cases, 138 have influenza-like illness (ILI), 16 have been diagnosed with severe acute respiratory illness (SARI), 68 are primary contacts, and 112 cases are under investigation. As many as 165 out of the 334 are asymptomatic.

Out of the 334 cases, as many as 191 are from Mangaluru, 78 from Bantwal, 20 from Beltangady, 20 from Puttur, six from Sullia and 19 are from outside DK district.

All the six patients who died on Sunday had comorbidities. While Mangaluru and Puttur reported two deaths each, two others were from outside DK district.


Udupi

As per the health bulletin released by the Udupi district administration, a total of 6,677 people are in COVID hospitals/care centres, including 78 fresh admissions on Sunday, while a total of 4,829 people are in home isolation, including 176 new on Sunday.

As many as 8,798 people, including 195 on Sunday, have been discharged from isolation so far. These include 5,415 from hospital isolation wards, and 3,383 from home isolation.

A total of 71,120 samples have been collected so far, including 1029 on Sunday, out of which 790 are COVID suspects and 99 are COVID contacts. Out of the total samples, 59,367 have turned out to be negative, including 254 on Sunday, and 240 reports are awaited.

As many as 11,513 confirmed cases of coronavirus have been reported so far in the district, including 254 on Sunday, and 2,620 cases are currently active. As per the district bulletin, 95 deaths have occured so far.

Among the 254 new cases, 145 are in Udupi, 61 in Kundapur, 40 in Karkala, and eight from outside the district. Among them, 107 acquired the virus through contacts, 92 have ILI, four have been diagnosed with SARI, and 47 are under investigation. Four patients have domestic travel history. Out of the 254 cases, 149 are asymptomatic.

    Why does DK have so many deaths everyday compared to Udupi which has 0 to 1 everyday. While the no of positives are similar for the 2 districts, death number is surprisingly higher in DK.
