Mangaluru: Coronavirus effect - Jobless lecturers turn into labourers

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (MS)

Mangaluru, Aug 29: Lecturers who have completed BA, BSc, MA, MSc, BEd and DEd, who shape up the future of students, are doing odd jobs now.

Coronavirus has badly affected the lives of these people. As schools and colleges are closed due to coronavirus, more than one lac teachers and lecturers of private schools, colleges and thousands of guest lecturers working in aided and government colleges are literally doing menial jobs in order to survive.

Teachers of government schools are doing online classes and are also involved in Covid-related duty. However, private teachers and guest lecturers were expecting schools and colleges to start in order to earn a living. Now almost three months have passed and they have taken to alternative jobs in order to make ends meet. Some are going for mason work, while others are working as agricultural labourers. Many women teachers are rolling beedis.

Ashok Kumar, teacher of a private school said, "From June till recently I used to go to agricultural work. But now all agriculture related work is over. Now I do not have job. I do not know about my future. I have done mason work for some time. I am worried about my family. Do not know how I am going to feed them. Other teachers also depend on daily wage work.

"Now online classes have started in private schools. But half of the teachers do not get salary as well as work. Many have been unceremoniously removed by the administrative committees of schools. Only few are recruited to conduct online classes for as low salary as Rs four to five thousand a month," said Ashok Kumar.

The plight of more than 22,500 guest teachers of government and aided schools is still worst. Generally they were getting selected in the month of June and attending duty from July. However, this year, they have not been called so far for work. Most of them are from the poorer section of the society. Some have even taken bank loan for their studies.

In Dakshina Kannada district alone, there are 550 guest teachers. Male guest teachers do daily wage work and also sell fruits and vegetables on roadside. Secretary of Dakshina Kannada district guest teachers' association Chitralekha says, "Government has to immediately make suitable arrangement for guest teachers."

A teary-eyed guest lecturer said, "I am a science lecturer at a private college. They gave me salary till the month of March and then removed from my job by sending an SMS on my mobile. I have two kids. How I have to manage my family, I do not know."

It is hard to believe what is happening with lecturers.what corona has brought to our India ,not only deadly infection but more powerty and joblessness ,more than in other countries.Atleast in western countryies one cant throw out teachers or any long time workers simply so.They are secured per law to pay them loan atleast 6months .or apply in jobcentre immediately .If India too had this law could have saved some tears in many workers. No wonder we workers have to pay from our loan for jobless workers everymonth ,so that in case of loss of job we can apply.

It is evident from this news that Lecturers are always paid less than the Labourers in India while starting their job ( I was a lecturer 35 years ago and this was the situation that time also). But this situation of working as a labourer was not at that time. enough jobs were available.

More than covid, people are suffering because of some money minded hospital management as well as some political parties who support them. Just think other countries who were more severely affected by covid are getting back to shape however India still remains the same with its ruined economy.

Sorry to say that we stay in a place where few people's greediness is fulfilled by innocent people's tears.

Rather app university and FB made big announcements and promises. Can you be more specific which company in India created more than 2 crores IT jobs recently. FYI, India's IT sector created only 8.73 lakh IT jobs in the last 5 years. Faking during Covid-19 pandemic without mask is disastrous.

Sad. Covid is not over yet. Worse yet to come to the world. Second wave will be the worst. No one is ready with vaccines. Just do our best to minimize the spread of this virus and make life normal first till then one has to survive like war type environments. Many will get depressed just isolated and many other impacts on them due to this covid. Only god can have mercy on this world and eliminate this virus. Let's pray that everyone safe and have something to eat and feed the loved ones in Jesus name.

Don't expect anything from Government. It is already crying. Did you guys not hear our FM Nirmala Sitharaman saying there is shortfall in GST collection and states will not be compensated. States should borrow from RBI if required with concessional interest rates.

She has invoked God and cited Indian economy in peril due to 'Act of God" 🤣🤣🤣. This time Nehru, Pakistan and Congress are saying..'hum bach gaye'.

Indian economy like a ghost ship in the ocean.

I am thinking if I should pay tax or blame it on God😂

How it can be possible? Schools/colleges collect fees before the classes begin. There are no instalment facilities in private educational institutions. Govt. Educational institutions I am not aware about the salary... If privates are not paying even after collecting the fees then that's not good ..

Very pitiful situation. Our economy did not fail due to Covid-19, it had worn out by Dec. 2019 to display in negative GDP. If our economy was strong, we could fight the financial aspects better.

No, it's m way or no way. Good, vote for Modi again in 2024, he must fix the damage he did to the nation's economy. How ? By double-taxing your voters.

In Bahrain 5 times more EWA people are paying per month (say 3k to now 15k). Now what you are going to explain dear??? do not blame voters!!! if you would have voted to NAMO you will not blame him straight away...we know who you are and what is your intention in this block...hehehe

    Mahatma,

Saudi Arabia, Bahrain or even UAE are not blink like you guys. They haven't hit plates or clapped and lit lamps to evade Corona. They have taken good care of their citizens (including expatriates) hence they are ensuring proper care while letting passengers in. Those who tested positive in those countries are admitted in good hospitals at Govt cost and discharged upon recovery. What India did ? Brought them in like cattle with no medical certificates. Loaded them in Wenlock and treated like prisoners.

Moreover, Arab Countries' preparation for bad times did not start in 2020 - they have been storing crude oil in Asian countries since past five years. Check yourself. India purchased the crude oil @50% of global oil price for storage but selling it for 200% to us INDIANS. You tell me, who is wise ? We Indians who are like puppets filling our tanks that petrol, or Arabs who made their money though @50% ? What is Indian Govt doing with the money squeezed for us citizens ? You please explain.

How was your Desh Bhakthi during Freedom Struggle while you were allying with Britishers against Indian freedom fighters??????..... Now after getting indepance you are leading in Desh Bhakthi?????!!!!....Even now why have you let the economy of your Desh down with negative GDP numbers which never happened since indepance of India?????. China, Nepal and Pakistan are bullying you like school kids and you are scared to address China by name to confront. Gulf states are not taxing its citizens but only the expatriates and during this covid period citizens are well taken care. FYI, as usual gulf countries give money to its citizens whether they work or no, so this pandemic has no effect on them. BTW, no humans votes for NaMo anymore it's either tampered EVMs or operation Kamala.

Why our people are not understanding that these Gujju's will sell this country, for them even politics is a business.

You are right! When COVID-19 tally was 600 they shutdown whole India
Now per day we have 70,000 plus cases they open whole India to collect tax.
This is the time they should have been used reserve money for much needed people instead they are looting public.
We will take another decade or more to make COVID free India like we took for POLIO.
