Mangaluru, Aug 19: Addressing a press meet in the city on Wednesday, August 19, president of Agricultural Produce Market Committee here, K Krishnaraj Hegde, said that fruits and vegetable traders, who were conducting business at the central market building, are conducting business by obtaining a licence from the APMC since the last some months at the APMC yard, Baikampady. He noted that other traders from here are also required to conduct their business at the APMC yard at Baikampady.



He said that the current central market suffers from lack of space and infrastructure. Because of heavy traffic, people, farmers and others are facing a lot of problems here. The building is over 60 years old and unsafe. The district administration had earlier decided to shift business from here to APMC yard but on account of certain legal issues, the matter is in court. He said that shifting of the market is also necessary towards taking effective measures against the spread of coronavirus infection.

Hegde said that the district administration had ordered shifting of business from here to the APMC yard, where facilities have been provided at an expense of Rs 1.6 crore. Facilities like godown with a capacity of seven metric tonnes are available there along with roads, drains, lighting etc. He said that efforts are being made to provide additional facilities by executing a special action plan there. He also said that facilities have been provided to traders there without collecting rent, market fee, service charges and other fees, and everything is provided free of cost now.

    It is first imperative to provide a proper entry and exit roads to the APMC yard at Bikampady from both carriageways of the NH66 highway. With bus-stand, road crossing, unscientific U-turn in front of the APMC yard, it is already a traffic mess. Once truck traffic to APMC yard is added, it will lead to huge traffic snarls at that place.
    If National highway authority (NHAI) had any scientific bent of mind, they should have planned and done it when the highway was planned. Since NHAI only thinks backwards and has no idea of predictive forward planning, that oppurtunity is lost.

    Stop all heavy truck movements inside city at any time. Automatically the city will extend.
