Bengaluru: 'Government seriously contemplating banning PFI, SDPI' - Basavaraj Bommai

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru (SP)

Bengaluru, Aug 13: State home minister Basavaraj Bommai, said that the government has been considering in all seriousness a proposal to place ban on organizations like the Popular Front of India (PFI) and the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI).

Speaking about the riots in the city, he explained that there is a set of specific procedure to be followed before any organization can be banned. "There were allegations that PFI and SDPI were behind the violence in Mangaluru. Names of these organizations had also figured during the murderous attack on Congress MLA Tanveer Sait last year. Many had demanded for banning these organizations," he explained.

Bommai stated that there is a provision in the statute to ban organizations involved with destructive and anti-national activities. "We will therefore follow these procedures. Among the arrested persons, there are office bearers, members and supporters of PFI and SDPI," he said.

The minister held a meeting with director general and inspector general of police Praveen Sood, Bengaluru police commissioner Kamal Pant, deputy commissioners of police and other senior officials. He said that the police had to resort to firing to quell the violence and asserted that there is no question of sparing those responsible for the violence.

Banning organizations does not help. Members of the alleged organization can always form new ones, along those lines. It is better to establish of those allegations hold validity in a court of law, and levy appropriate punishments on the perpetrators of arson and for threatening human life.

It would appreciated by all if the government takes this stand. These two organizations have been a menace, especially in the coastal area.
Moreover, they are snatching votes from traditional Congress vote bank.
