Mangaluru, Jul 31: Muslims from coastal region are celebrating Eid on Friday July 31. The celebration this time however has been of low key because of restrictions placed in tune with the threat of coronavirus infection that has been looming large.

People came to Nadupalli mosque at Kudroli and offered prayers and did spiritual reflection in a solemn atmosphere. They were found wearing masks when offering prayers, and maintained social distance as per the government instructions. At the same time, the Idgah prayer ground at Lighthouse Hill, which usually witnessed prayers and enthusiastic celebrations including exchange of greetings in the past on Eid, wore a deserted look this time as the government has barred Eid prayers from being offered at Idgah grounds, marriage halls etc.

At Udupi, Bakrid is being celebrated in an atmosphere of devotion and holy environment. Covid norms are being enforced strictly by maintaining social distance and duly using sanitizers.

The priest led prayers at Jamia Masjid at Udupi. Only 50 members were allowed to participate in prayers inside the mosque building at a time. The mosque committee made sure that social distancing norms were observed by the people visiting the mosque.

Similar scenes were witnessed in other mosques all along the coast. The people avoided shaking hands or hugging one another, which normally are part of the Eid celebrations, as per the rules.

Eid Mubarak. Hope there wont be any spike in Covid cases because of this celebration. Why do these people want to gather outside their homes?

    Eid Mubarak to all.

Millions of Muslims around the world will begin celebrating the Feast of Sacrifice or Eid al Adha today, evoking the Quranic account of Prophet Abraham’s trial, in which he was ordered by God to sacrifice his most beloved possession, his son Ishmael.

Abraham, whose name etymologically means the father of nations, would have slaughtered his son following God’s command without question, but in the face of the Prophet’s sheer determination and strength of faith, God swapped Ishmael with a ram and Abraham slaughtered it instead.

Since the Prophet Mohammed’s era, Muslims have marked the incident by sacrificing animals.

After the sacrifice, Muslims share meat with the needy, who might not eat meat often, and their relatives, fulfilling God’s vision of brotherly relations.

They also visit each other to tighten their friendships and to heal old wounds.
