Mangaluru: Shortage of Chinese engines, spare parts may hit fishing

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Jul 13: There has been a huge crescendo for banning all Chinese things in the country. This has given rise to shortage of Chinese engines and their spare parts which are used by fishermen in coastal Karnataka in a big way. This issue had been raised by the fishermen leaders during their interaction with MP Nalin Kumar Kateel, and fisheries minister Kota Srinivas Poojary, at the zilla panchayat auditorium here recently.

As per an estimate, there are over 2,000 boats using Chinese engines at the old port dock in the city and Malpe. Fishermen leader, Mohan Bengre, says that the fishermen heavily depend on China for spare parts and if their spare parts do not come, they would be listless.

Several Chinese brands of engines are widely in use. These companies have their dealerships at Kochi, Kollam and Nagercoil with offices at all the fishing docks. Engines of different Chinese companies are in use on the entire coast. These engines have hydraulic gear system, whereas Indian firms manufacturing such engines have not been able to match performances of the Chinese engines, it is said. Therefore the Indian companies have to improve the quality and performance of their engines.

Purse seine boat engines cost Rs 20 to 24 lac. An entire purse seine boat requires an investment of about Rs 2 crore and provides employment to about 40 persons. Therefore, the availability of engines and spare parts is crucial for fishing activity. Added to the spare parts problem is the shortage of migrant workers. Not only the fishing but even ice plants heavily depend on workers from other districts and states. Therefore, whether the fishing season expected to begin on August 1 will begin that day or not is a million-dollar question.

To compete with China, we will have to purge our entire system of working & follow their work culture, discipline, hard work, remove corruption, red tape & emulate their ethics or we are at least 10 years behind them; and in a global economy any dumb businessman will always go for the cheapest & best to increase his profits & stay competitive in business in a world of cutthroat competition isn't it??

@ Rohan Who told you automobile parts are Chinese made ? Do you really have a background knowledge or automotive education ? Do you think spare parts of maruti, hyundai , tata mahindra are coming of China or manufactured locally in india ?? Are you aware that most of vehicles are manufactured here and exported to other countries ?

If you're speaking of general industry like agriculture pump sets ,fans , low end scooter I can guarantee you they are from China.

Please start other sources or options for imports. Do not relay only on China. If you depend completely on Chinese , we will not develop local industries. Chinese products are cheap at present and they can increase their prices once the demand is high.
    Ban Chinese products.

Now we realize how difficult suppose when we depend on foreign articles.why should we depend on others?Dont we have enough technology and Ingeniers in India .?Let us wake up and try to improve it.It might take one or two years more.but at the end we will have it.Send some technic personal for further seminars or further studies elsewhere to improve.China too did it in the beginning .They wanted it to learn and come up ,not to depend on others. Now they provide for less money, increase their export ,.The problem is in us.wait till the last minute for parts to import.why dont we reserve some important things at the last minute.we have to learn a lot to improve ourselves.
