Rahul Gandhi takes a jibe at Shah over COVID-19 handling

New Delhi, Jul 13 (IANS): As the total coronavirus cases in India inch towards the grim nine lakh mark, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Monday sharpened his attack on the Central government over its handling of the pandemic.

"India at good position in COVID-19 battle?" he tweeted, alluding to a graph which showed a rise in daily coronavirus cases across the world. In the graph, cases in India could be seen skyrocketing.

The remarks came a day after Union Home Minister Amit Shah said that the country is at a "good position" in the battle against the coronavirus pandemic.

On Monday, India recorded its highest single-day spike of 28,701 coronavirus cases and 500 deaths, pushing the total tally to 8,78,254 cases with a total of 23,174 deaths. It is the third worst-affected country and rallies behind the US and Brazil.

Washing dirty cloth in public is undignified. Some things need to be sorted differently. This is public nuisance. Now Mahesh Bhatt will produce one more movie on this.

It is to be noted that India recorded its first case of COVID-19 on January 30, 2020. But throughout February, the Central Government failed to act to curb the spread of the virus or make preparations to deal with it.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi "The Corona Virus is an extremely serious threat to our people and our economy. My sense is the government is not taking this threat seriously. Timely action is critical. "-2:16 AM · Feb 12, 2020

Instead the Central Government organised large crowds and rallies to greet US President Trump, exposing thousands to the danger of the virus. The supporters of the ruling BJP- led “communal” mobs in North East Delhi in February.

Warnings by Opposition leaders in early February about the approaching Covid-19 epidemic were met with mockery by the Central Government.

Not only that, BJP leaders and supporters led the way in holding large gatherings even after the danger was clear and the lockdown was announced. 700 MPs attended Parliament; the BJP performed its coup in the MP Assembly, held a large gathering to celebrate the coup on 24 March and UP Chief Minister also held a gathering in Ayodhya in violation of lockdown.

The fact remains however that several other large religious and political gatherings were held in the same period, and since testing in India is low, it is difficult to know how many cases could be linked to those gatherings.

The other religious gatherings include those at the Shirdi Saibaba temple, gatherings by a Sikh preacher, and quite recently, pilgrims to Vaishno Devi who are stranded there during the lockdown (and who may well have carried the virus to remote hill communities).

Today India ranks third in the world Pandemic chart with numbers reaching one million. But BJP seems to be more interested in 'Operation Kamala' in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh Bye elections rather than completed focus on health care system.
