Mangaluru/Udupi, Jul 5: The city wore a deserted look on the morning of Sunday, July 5, with total lockdown reimposed in the state amid the rising number of coronavirus cases.

Total lockdown will be imposed every Sunday starting July 5, as per the government's order.

Except for the city's civic workers and vehicles transporting essential supplies, the streets were almost empty.

The markets which were bustling with activity despite the coronavirus outbreak were deserted. All shops, barring pharmacies and those selling essential supplies, remain closed.

Police have been deployed in areas such as Pumpwell and near Town Hall and other points to ensure that citizens do not violate the lockdown. Barricades have been put up at various points in the city such as Lalbagh, Pumpwell and Town Hall.
The few vehicles that were seen plying were stopped by the police and only those with valid reasons were allowed to proceed.

Deputy commissioner Sindhu B Rupesh has informed that during the lockdown, there will be no sale of vegetables and meat in the entire district. She has urged people to cooperate with the district administration and remain indoors.

The lockdown will be lifted at 5 am on Monday, July 6.

Udupi

Udupi has tremendously supported the decision by the Karnataka government of imposing the Sunday lockdown. All the shops and restaurants were closed for the day. The only stores that were seen functioning were that of grocery and newspaper shops.

Following the lockdown on July 5, the KSRTC and private bus operators also suspended their service. With the deserted look spread across the city, only a handful of people were seen on the roads. The police department has beefed up the security and every vehicle moving is being thoroughly checked. If any unnecessary movement is seen police have been given orders to seize the vehicles and impose fines.

Today i had ordered food from swiggy from a nearby restaurant which was permitted for delivery services. Later i got a call from the delivery executive , who told that the police were beating his colleagues even though they were permitted to deliver. Not only that their vehicle was seized. Luckily, my delivery executive was able to turn away from the cops. Its terrible how they are being mistreated even though they provide their services. Police brutality has reached its peak.
